Great photos folks. Chris, nice heavyweight cars. Who made the interesting  pullman cars behind the Lionel car? It has been a little slow train time. Still waiting for the second Lionel PRR commuter car that supposedly shipped two weeks ago. Tonight I cleaned my PRR decapod's wheels and rollers and pulled a centerline track cleaning car around the layout.

I scored the three switches I need for this project on the Cabin Fever MTH auction today . At about $10 each below retail, it won't hurt so much to cut them to pieces.

And a shout out to @CurtisH thanks for mentioning Cabin Fever, I didn't think they would have the switches.

Should have kept my big fat mouth shut as you were bidding against me. LOL

Does hanging curtains and cleaning track count?  Honestly, it’s the most I’ve done with my layout for over a year!  Chris A I’m glad to see you back and it’s making me feel better about my not doing anything and getting motivated at the same time.  More track to clean, trying a new method and hopefully will have a customer’s grandkid over soon to watch some trains.  Scenic Express7C9F2302-F5EA-49B3-8DB3-5956CCD39AD5 here I come for some supplies and also working on ordering another engine to my roster.

Hi Pennsynut,  all the other Pullman Heavyweight  cars in that train are 3rd Rail / Sunset.  The US Post Office car is plastic, the other Pullmans are 21 inch brass cars.  I managed to find them at a local seller at the last Big E show in Springfield, MA in Jan 2020.  Have to admit, I am really missing attending local meets and shows here in New England.

Just placed an order with the Plaster Guys for another 25 pounds of Hydrocal so I can cast another 4 or 5 sections of those Pennsy Stone Block walls.

Hi Mike and rest of the ogr folks. Happy new year to all. Mike I am curious about your tear out of your printer for motors and such. I have a non-working printer and would like to use the motor(s) for a ski gondola lift project for my grandkids for next Christmas. What do you do for transformer to power the motor? Regards.

Good Morning, I just use an old HO transformer and run it threw a buck convertor and dial it in till things run smooth. Its funny you say your building a ski gondola, I plan on trying to build one down the road with one of the motors I have from the old printer. The ones I have used in the past are to rotate my construction cranes!

You guys are so talented.

I must do a google on just what is a ski gondola 🤣

my wife just cleaned out a drawer an handed me a hand full of mascara and small brushes to use to clean my engines and rolling stock.

All these will be great to use on my steam engines and any part if the trucks you can get to while oiling.

Does she get any points today ?

A Happy anew Year to the Forum
🥳

As is normal for my railroad, this took a few days.  I own three Lionel #1055's, no reverse or magnatraction.  One is my first Lionel engine.  That engine will remain stock.  For Christmas I bought a set of #210's and a #218.  These were bought in rough condition.  I pieced the 210 shells back together, serviced the powered unit and put a roller pickup in the dummy unit for lights.  The 218 had no shell and did not run.  I had to correct three cold solder joints and service the motor.  Today I ran them all together for the first time.  I shot a little video.  Next up is custom paint.  I like 200 series ALCO's.

Yep- an old HO (DC) transformer works great.

Mike:  Nice job on the power lines...  Your layout is looking great.  Amazing how much you've gotten done since I "disappeared" last Spring !!  Thanks for the tip on gutting old printers, that's a really great source of parts/drives for an animation project.

I took apart one of my brass heavyweight cars that someone had converted to LED lighting,  but didn't use a buck converter so I added one so I could adjust the lighting level, added some additional passengers while I was in there.

Hi Don. Happy New year. Wondering about your roller replacement project. Did you replace the whole roller assembly?

Seth,  Thanks for the positive feedback.   The walls between the lower and upper track level were cast out of plaster.  The walls below the MTH weathered brick station were purchased in the "Flexible Foam" material which is similar to but not exactly like the rigid foam wall sections. The middle section of the lower walls in front of the station is actually the face of a "Pullout Drawer" that has a control panel on it with the switch controls for that section of the layout upper and lower....

I made my own Latex mold of one if the flexible sections as I knew I would end making around 8 to 10 of the cast ones out of Hydrocal...   Couldn't .........

What great work being done today! I Figure everyone would be taking the day off to enjoy the holiday, man was I wrong! LOL

Well today I got out there early and painted a couple tubes for silos for the Morton Salt building. Then the CEO stated that she thought it would be nice if there was another park on the layout so I put one right across the entry way to the train room. I think I am going to have to build a walkway from one to the other! LOL

I also worked on the back corner where the track will one day go out side. Here are a couple photos for you all to enjoy, I will hit it again tomorrow.

Miggy,  thanks for your kind words...  Trust me there are no "Superpowers" here, just perseverance and a bunch of time looking & reading on this forum as well as watching a ton of YouTube videos on scenery.   Can't speak for anyone else, but it took me decades of trying to create scenery with many, many disappointments & failures.

So don't get discouraged, I think the only way to get there is to continue to try new techniques, do it over and over and over again and then one day you're pleasantly surprised with the result.  The other thing I have come to accept, is there aren't too many short cuts that provide really pleasing results on most projects.  Now that I have accepted that it's going to be a multi-step process and it's going to take longer than I would have originally liked, it's worth the time to be patient, (very hard for me)... go through all the steps and then move on to the next project.

Here's some shots of some of the other scenery on this layout.   I may have posted some of these shots before, but I tend to learn as much from looking at other member's layout photos, as reading long sets of instructions on how to do it.

Mike G - , nice job there, but I think you're eating too many chips !

Mike g., wow, the layout is alive and looking good, also you must have the patience of Job to connect the lines to the telephone poles, very neat work. To connect the MTH signals up, I suggest insulated rail or connecting to a track turnout. I feel sure someone with an owners manual will chime in. Mitch Marmel, I love your Texas Special set a few days ago, your layout ideas are novel, also, the kittens like it to, Don Winslow, the Wester Pacific AA is beautiful, that’s a great color scheme, super nice layout, and you have some neat steamers to. Chris A, it’s nice to see you back in action again and seeing that beautiful Kline hudson at work, great passenger trains,Wow. I didn’t work on the layout today but spent time rearranging the trains on the shelves. I placed all of the Century Club One Engines in their display cases in the same area. So I was surfing around last night and found a video on YouTube by forum member, Santiago featuring some CB&Q Burlington steam engines.   The video was so inspiring, I decided I really needed to open my Sunset/3rd Rail  O5a 4-8-4 Northern #5629.  His video work is outstanding !    It was like giving myself a Christmas gift...  I opened this engine once about 12 years ago, when I purchased it, and then it went back in the box as I was dealing with my mom and dad's health issues, job changes, and all of life's other challenges.   Boy was I thankful I found Santiago's video..  Took it out put it at the head of some Pullman Heavyweights, and decided to take some photos.....  definitely made my day !!!

I painted some balsa for the details I am adding to my retaining wall prints. I painted them with some acrylics, I did a brown with some black mixed in first. After it dried I realized the pieces were too dark so I did a couple of washes with some gray's and tans. It's hard to match the colors in the prints but I think I'm close.

Maybe a little red/rust???

Mark, Jay, Steve, Bob, pennsynut - thanks for the kind words.  Sorry if I missed someone.   Yes Mark,  I really like the B&O EM-1, 4-8-8-4.   Especially this one in particular, as I bought it from Will Allen after he had the entire TMCC Railsounds system upgraded  to RS5.0 by Mike Reagan.   Ended up selling the first one I purchased with original RS 4.0.

I need to work on improving my video recording skills

Bob thanks for noticing the block signal system working.....  That turned out to be one of those projects you get 25% into and start wondering "What have I gotten myself into ????",  but it's very rewarding now that it's done.   Thanks so much to Stan2004 for all his help with the relay system design so that it looks 2 blocks ahead in both directions and realistically controls the Yellow Light aspect if there is a train 2 blocks ahead.   Ended up with 11 blocks on the main, signal protected in both directions....

Of course I ended up buying a new temp controlled soldering station, an illuminated headset with 4 different magnifiers on it, just so I could see and solder wire leads to the LED's ...

You had me fooled Bob,  all this time I have been looking at photos of the retaining walls, around the tunnel entrance, I thought you scratch built them out of wood !

Bob,  balsa is really porous wood, not sure if this idea would help, but you might try sealing the balsa with clear coat, then weather it, that might minimize the pigments soaking in and producing a result that is too dark.    Now that I think about it, it's probably too late for that idea.

Thanks Chris- the prints are very realistic looking. I found a guy in the UK who has a blog (mostly N and HO), who offers many prints for sale. I've used several of them on various projects. This is far from a permanent layout so I don't want to invest much in buildings, etc until I can build a bigger layout. This flat and the fence are also paper prints.

Finally found a location to install a siding to park my new Lionel LC+2.0 Big Boy. I have to back it onto the siding off the main, but it's better than leaving it on a main loop or having to take it on and off the layout entirely when I want o run it.

Cut a large notch out of the layout edging to allow room to put in the new switch and the siding onto a nearby bookcase. I used a lighted bumper at the end of the siding. I don't have room on  my control panel for another toggle switch to turn the siding on and off so, instead, I cut the center rail on the first piece of Fastrack; drilled a hole for a push button switch and epoxied it in place from underneath; and soldered wires from the first center rail tab to the switch and then from the switch to the other center rail tab.

A 1 X 6 piece of wood shelving cut to length, plus 1/4" foam FT roadbed raised the siding to level with the layout surface and still leaves enough room to display some racing/sports memorabilia.

Whenever I want to run the engine, I just push the button and the lighted bumper lets me know it's powered up.

I know you're a fan of Western Maryland. That's a Legacy F7 AA WM diesel set in the background with either a Williams or Atlas B unit (can't remember which) in the middle. One of my favorite and most reliable engines.

I improved the only grade crossing in town today.  I had some MTH wig wag signals that I added to the layout.  These were originally signals that also had the overhead lights, unfortunately those parts were damaged during a recent move.  I lopped them off and added 19 cent rubber caps from Ace Hardware above the crossbucks.  Paired with the gateman, I think they look pretty nice.

Hi everyone for some reason I haven't been getting emails from OGR the last couple days. I will have to check my settings.

So the last couple days I worked on the layout. I was able to get lights wired to the hummer on the bridge behind Batman. Also in the new train platform in the new park area. Then I redid the piping from my silos to the building, I didn't like the round pipe. Here are a few photos.IMG_20210103_142035829IMG_20210103_142048868IMG_20210104_151010387

Mike, I'm really glad you got your engine running again!!

Yesterday I cut a piece of hardboard for the switches to shutoff power to my sidings and Ceiling Central Railroad when I want to park an engine.  When I went to layout the board for drilling holes, I saw my toggle switches were only rated at 6 amps.  I decided I should buy switches rated at least 10 amps.  The order has been placed with Digikey.  I'll wait until I receive them before doing anything else on that.  I think I'll start work on my powered lift up bridges.

To add four offset domes to my NP North Coast Limited train, I applied the Scalecoat II NP Light Green to the four LIONEL 15" aluminum offset dome cars yesterday and let it dry the prescribed 24 hours.  Coverage looked pretty good so proceeded with the next step:  applying the SCII white paint for the stripe that separates the light and dark greens.

This is a test of an approach:  spray light green; mask that and apply white paint; then mask that using Tamiya 2mm tape; and, spray the dark green.  So, now I'll wait 24 hours; apply the 2mm mask; and, apply the dark green tomorrow.  Fingers crossed that this will work.  Only doing one car now as proof of approach; the other three await the results.

Alternatively, I have on hand fresh 2mm white decal stripes which I can use if the painted white stripe doesn't work.  I'd prefer the paint since the decals would need to be spliced to cover the length of the car.

Photos to follow.

I reworked the inner part of the layout to add bypass of the two main lines to allow 3 trains to run continuously at once.

I also went down to my local hobby shop with my wife. The LHS had a good selection of menards buildings. My wife liked the brewery and lumber yard buildings so I picked up the brewery and added it to the layout.

Bob, The retaining walls are looking outstanding!

Steve, Very cool video! Nice work!

Carl, wow that's a lot of work! I am sure it will turn out looking amazing just like everything else you put out!

JStewart, Good choice on the Brewery! If I had the room I would pick one up, but some how I am running out of space! LOL

Mpeck, I am sure your right there, But I really wouldn't know as I have never seen any of the movies listed! Sorry!

Well guy I worked on the walking bridge between the 2 parks on both sides of the entryway into the train room. It took me a good part of the day but I think it turned out looking ok. FYI there are 126 planks that make the bridge deck! LOL Here are a few photos for your enjoyment!

Reconfigured the approach to my industrial zone now that it has a large peninsula addition added on which also now has passenger service.

Up to now the industrial zone was approached via a switch back but with the increased traffic flow the new track work will allow direct access to the mainline.  Just backed the first string of 80 footers through the maze of points smoothly.  Nice.

Little late on my annual time frame changeover. Once a year I change from diesel to steam era's. So this year all the steam era is put away and my display ages thirty years. I'm know diesel era. Business changes, motor vehicles change and of course all my motive power and rolling stock. I'm almost done.
