SJB18 :  Those units look great Bob.  You could even run an AABA if you wanted, RR in later years put the A units wherever they needed extra power.

Don

Like the AABA  Don.

I run my plated SF  F7 Premiers occasionally that way .

I run my UP  F7 Premiers as  AAA since I haven't been able to find the B unit.

These arrangements keep things from getting too boring . 😉

Finished the basic construction of my track cleaning car body. I had a one-step-forward moment. After I glued the end pieces on the body, it wouldn't fit over the car frame. It was a bit too short so first I had to remove the ends, add a thin piece of basswood, and reapply the end panels. After they dried, I added some 4mm angles to form the edge of the deck. I have more detailing to work on next but it's looking good so far.
The pipe load is going to get more detailing too. Need to figure out what parts I need and get an order in to Plastruct.

As promised, I spent a rainy Sunday afternoon in the basement. First I laid out the pipe load for the track cleaning car and wrote up a list of parts and pieces I need to order.

Then I installed GRJ's isolated rail relay to replace an ice cube relay for my crossing signals. The ice cube chattered as the car rolled over the block and the noise drove me crazy. Much better now

Oh yea- the mystery of the day. I put my K-line ATSF S-2 on the track and backed it up to grab a couple of cars.  First time the couplers didn't close, second time same result. I looked closer to see what was wrong and discovered that the rear coupler was GONE! I have no idea where it is and I know it was there....

I need to talk to my son and see if he knows anything about it.

Always good to have young ones...............it seems now that I remember Dad always asking what we did with his tools !!??!! 😉

And yes, my father complained that I never put his tools back too. 🤪

I made that mistake once!  Dad never minded me using tools, but when I left a saw outside overnight and it go dew on it, he only chastised me, but I never forgot.  I was a pretty easy kid to manage I guess

My 25 + year layout is pretty well settled, so I have made very few dramatic renovations or changes in many years.

However, with all of the rain today in the NYC metro area where I live, I got ambitious and replaced an occasionally  problematic 022 switch with one that operates flawlesdly.

The switch is in an awkward place: behind a washing machine at a reverse loop, so it took some time to replace it.

I hope I haven't bored you folks with this mundane contribution. LOL.

WOW, I haven't been on for a couple of days and everyone is in ramp up mode! I wish I had something new for you guys, but the wife is killing me with all the to do projects! LOL

Railhead53, Outstanding work on your rock wall!

Jesse, Great looking scrap yard!

Bob, The track cleaning car is coming right along, really looking good! Also I love the flag pole!

JP, I am glad you enjoy that and that it works, but my head hurts just looking at it!

Ted, wonderful job on the Police car lights! I also love the night scene!

Well it looks like the wife is giving me the day today for train room stuff. Since the price of plywood has gone down, first thing this morning I plan on going to town to get I hope the last sheet I will need, it should give me enough to finish where the town is going and the upper loop on the other end by the industrial area.

Then all I will need is time ! LOL

I hope you all have a great week and find time for your layout and to have some fun with your trains!

Oh P.S. I got the layout control board sticker from the printer, one small problem they printed it to small I asked for 10" X 16" and here is what I got!

IMG_20210821_073959

As you can see its only 6 1/2 X 12 7/8th!

I'm in a similar boat.  After the Greenburg show and a family gathering on Saturday I had planned to spend a good portion of Sunday working on the layout.   Instead, I spent the day getting a new cell phone as I had dropped mine and shattered the screen and getting my son all packed up and ready to head back to college on Friday.   I won't have much time this week with work and then taking my son back to college.  My wife and I are making a weekend out of it.   Labor Day weekend is all trains between driving N&W 611, my layout and the club layout!

Everyone's work looks great!

-Greg

During the Hot weather and the rain in upstate NY made some changes to my layout cut open a couple areas and did some scenery work to beat the rain and heat, Repainted a couple k-line bridges moss green and added some animals, Got tired of mowing and painting sheds lol HAGD all! God Bless our Troops in Afghan!

Not the best camera, guess u can say out of date.

Cool project Bob I’m watching from the front row.

Hi guys, I hope your all having a great day sofar! LOL I know its still early.

JPLoco, Mark, and Dave yes I got it in writing. They are going to reprint and ship out to me and should get 2 copies buy Wednesday. They felt bad because this is what they do for a living, so not only are they reprinting, shipping for free, they also gave me a full refund!

Sitka, it may not be the best camera, but it sure is a wonderful looking layout!

Lee, D. Outstanding work on the Santa Fe trailer! Turned out looking great!

Well as for me, I got my second sheet of plywood and cut it. Set it up into  place just to check things out. Sorry no photos , but then I started the fun job of washing my used Ballast to get the glue off so I can reuse it. I still have alot of that to wash but I wanted to get the track under the second level ballasted so I can move up!

I hope everyone has a great day and finds time for your layouts and trains!

Mike G. - Your control panel made me rethink how I was going to mount the block controls. I decided to make one common panel with both yards on it. Today I cut and assembled both the control panel frame but also a 3 inch extension near the ZW. The control panel frame is hinged to move up so wiring can be accessed easier. I have not cut the plexiglass yet but I did make a rabbit in the frame to accept the plexiglass. There are a couple of cleats to support the panel when its in the down position. Thanks for all the great ideas on the forum.Extension FrameFrame coveredExtension FramePanel Frame AssembledControl Panel Frame Down PositionControl Panel Frame Hinged Up Position

Victor, looks great I think its going to work wonderful and your going to be very happy with it when your done!

I too am like you that I love all the great ideas the you can get from the forum and how folks here are willing to help each other out!

Today is kind of booked up but if I get the time I am going to break out the little BBQ to try and put a hurry on drying my washed ballast.

I hope everyone has a great day and finds time for there layouts and some fun with there trains!

Morning guys, well yesterday I finished drying a little over 12lbs of washed used ballast and put the first coat of paint down on the area that will be under the town on the second level! Here are a couple photos.IMG_20210826_125224IMG_20210826_140029

Today I am going to work on my control panel as I got the new prints from the printer. If I have time I will do some more painting, I have to paint the side of the rails and dont want to use spray paint. So I went to the local paint store and had them match up some paint from the cap of spray paint I used before!

I hope you all have a great weekend and find time for your layout and fun with your trains!

Made progress on the control panel over the last couple of days. I cut the 3/16" thick plexiglass using a circular saw with a new 60 tooth carbide blade. Cutting was  easy and did not chip. I test fit the plexiglass with the protective paper still on into the painted frame. There was two pieces of plexiglass left over so I used the smaller one and made a mockup to test the drilling procedure. I am using a step bit to drill 3/8" and 1/2" holes. The step bit works well without chipping.

For the panel, I applied four light coats of yellow paint as the undercoat after scuffing with 600 grit paper. After a day of drying, I masked the locations of the tracks. The layout was created in SCARM and I made a print section for the two yards. I cut the tracks out and was left with a pattern to guide the masking. This was easy and the turnouts and curved tracks were masked onto the plexiglass. The last photo shows the tracks cutout from the SCARM print over the masked panel. cut and fit plexiglass in frameIndicator light and switch mockupPanel MaskedOverlay of tracks cutout

@modeltrainsparts & @Tranquil Hollow RR, thanks for the input and ideas. But the think is most of my track is already painted Earth Brown from Rustolium. That is the color match I had done this morning, so I can try to keep things somewhat realistic. If I do nothing you will see nice and bright gold track sides.

Victor, looking great! I am glad your not having any problems with the plexiglass, I cut mine with the same blade but on the table saw. I like how your track plans are transfering over to your painted plexiglass. I just don't have the patients or skills to do all that, plus its easier for me to have someone print them up for me. I just tell the wife I cant build everything! LOL

So I too worked on my control panel today, I put down the vinal sticker track plan down, then started drilling new holes and installing toggle switches. I got 16 installed and still have 4 more to do for the upper loop. Sorry no painting today! LOLIMG_20210827_152344

Street lights went up today. Everything isn’t glued down as yet.

It’s been a long time getting to this point on the scenery.

We will begin connecting all the lighting to the accessories power loop under the layout this weekend.  Hopefully all the connections will work. Probably take me a week to complete the connections.

Mark, thank you sir. I hope to get the control panel finished today so I can move on to ballasting! LOL More fun!

Seth, outstanding Railroad Street! Sure are some wonderful looking old building, reminds me of going threw some of the older towns around my house. It always makes me wonder what it would have been like to live in those days!

Mike the community I grew in was an industrial setting and lots of employment. All that finally ended in 1970.   I can recall the smell of the steam smoke, but only the sounds of diesel.  I understand the pusher for help to the mountain top was the last steam engine on the tracks in Olive Hill.

Downtown Businesses soon began to disappear.

I’m recreating my memory before it fades.  I will place bus station, fire dept, school, gas stations on the remaining layout areas.  I spent so much time at Monk Dunaway’s Standard Oil station my mom complained that the grease and oil wouldn’t wash outta my clothes nor my veins!

Most of the town, Dave,  are Woodlands Scenic as well as the apartment building.  Three new assembled kits but most of the structures I have purchased used via the OGR forum.  Refurbished several.

All new lights have been installed, primarily LED.

A special Thanks!

to everyone who visits town and shared a like!

Enjoy your weekend.

Victor, your panel looks great!

Seth, all I know is I really like how your layout is coming along!

Dave, if your control panel is anything like the rest of your layout, I know it's going to be outstanding!

As for me today I finished the control panel, painted the side rails, and painted the plywood for the upper level. Oh and started to ballast so I can get the upper level started. Just a few photos.IMG_20210828_151430IMG_20210828_151435IMG_20210828_151443IMG_20210828_151455IMG_20210828_155838

I need it for my Santa Fe project I’ve started for this winter. So I removed the decals and gave it a good bath/scrubbing painted it and added some Microscale Decals. I hooked it to a Consist of Lionel O27 cars and add my Santa Fe Piggyback Trailer I made last week and gave it a run around the layout. I’m getting hooked on these Lionel O27 cars.

OK Seth. I didn't realize WS made an apartment building in O Scale. I will have to look it up. Everything is looking good in your town so far. Keep bringing us the progress.

Dave

Lee, neat Santa Fe project, you are really a very talented person how you do all these redo builds!

FECRailroaddog, outstanding work on the boxcar

Bob, Looks great! I hope you get some sun today so you can move ahead with your wonderful build!

Nothing not as of yet today, but I hope to get the ballast all done under where the upper level is going so I can also work on that area.

Mike, Painting the "earth" under the ballast and greenery, etc, that dark grey (Or is it light black?) is what i have been recommending for years. I tell people to look around the outside through a paper towel tube with one eye closed; the predominate color you will see is grey - EXCEPT in the southwest, of course. It looks great plus i like your new track plan.

My grandkids were over for a visit the last couple of days.  Ryan likes being creative with my cars - not my train cars - but vehicle cars. Apparently my placement on streets is not where they should be. Tops of roofs and bridges are much better places.

ryan with trains

And then I showed him how to operate DCS on my android pad - he was so excited ran upstairs to tell his dad about the great "new toy" on my layout.  He and his sister like to turn out the room lights and dance in the middle section of the layout. All while they had an engine running 120 scale mph, amazingly it ran really well.  I have no idea why they use the middle as a performance stage - no point in trying to figure it out - just enjoy the cacophony.

Losing track!  Yes, I have missed a bunch of great projects here, so I will just say, they are all great each in a different way.  I regret I have not done much on the layout.  Yesterday my wife Kim and I took a road trip to Ohio to show her Corner Field Model Railroad Museum, the fantastic work of the Elesh Family; Tom Sr, Vicki, Tom Jr, and Ashley.  I’ll not post any photographs here, but I’ll get some posted when I get them off my phone.

Thank you for posting this, Jeff!  It is priceless!!

My latest addition today. I just purchased the new Woodland Scenics Miss Molly's Diner and setup a place for it. Wired it up, now I just have to do the asphalt driveway and parking lot. Nice model. I had to move a house and a bread shop so Miss Molly's would be on the main street across from the passenger Depot. Once the parking lot is done, I'll post an update.

My son-in-law completed a great deal buying some 0-gauge trains from a friend.   I provided some 027 switches and track to help increase the enjoyment opportunities for our great-grandson.  In exchange, he presented me with a nice MTH flat car which I am now detailing.   The target is a DMIR flat with a load of ties (sleepers for you Europeans).   I have a few parts on order and trying to source out adequate decals, but the current status shows the completed end bulkheads that I made from scrape styrene.

Stay safe and get your vaccine!

Cheers, Dave

That original 497 coal loader operates very smoothly.

I was able to drill the holes in the control panel yesterday with the Milwaukee step bit. This was easy and left no chips or burrs. The switch holes are 1/2" and the indicator light holes are 3/8". I did use a small pilot hole just to ensure the step bit would be centered on the track line. Holes Drilled in PanelI supported the plexiglass panel on some homasote while drilling, but just on one side. I did not want to drill into the homasote and make a dust storm.

RSJB18,

Yea the whole boxcar lifts up, if you look close the boxcar sits on a platform that is screwed to a 1/2"x1/2" piece of bass wood that is glued to metal base. I have to lift up the boxcar, then unscrew wood base to get to pad screws. Here are a couple more picture. All the braces, etc. made it super sturdy.

I glued 4 small blocks to the corners of the car to center the load on the car. I cut openings for the pad hardware to move around.

As I mentioned before Bob, this needs to be published. An observation: Will the skirts hang up on tight curves?

I don't think so Jay...There is adequate clearance for the trucks to swivel and the body is relatively high compared to a typical flat car.

But now that you let Mr. Murphy out of his box, I guess I should road test it before painting.

Thanks

Evening guys! I hope everyone had a wonderful Monday!

Jeff, Sounds and looks like a great time for the grandkids! But one might thing that maybe you had a better time then they did! LOL

Darrell, Looks like the coal loader works very well! Nice job getting it going.

WesternPacific2217, Molly's diner looks perfect! One would thing probably has great breakfast!

Dave, way to step up to the plate and help out the son-in-law! But more important for your great grandson! Looks like you have a wonderful start on the new to be DMIR Flatcar! I hope you can find some decals!

Well for me I was able to get out to the train room this morning and before I did anything I made sure I had all routs on my lower level covered with power. Good thing I did as I had 2 sections I had forgot to add drops! LOL After I got that taken care of I mounted the upper level plywood and was able to get the cork roadbed put down. Now I am just waiting for the glue to dry and I will install the track and start figuring out where the buildings are going to go.

I am thinking about leaving a 6" section of wood on the outside of the track for a road, but I am not going to leave it square! I just might cut it to fallow the lower lever track line and build a wall from the lower level to the upper. I am open to suggestions! Here is a photo.IMG_20210830_150813

I dont think I will get anything done tomorrow as I have to help a friend!

Follow the contour but you do not need 6 inches.   I would cut it closer and expose more of the activity on the lower level.   How would you tie in a road on the left that follows the contour on the outside radius?   You will probably need some trestles, steep banks, retaining walls and tunnels.   You have some nice track activity on the lower left that I would want to keep exposed.    That's my two cents!

Cheers, Dave

P.S:  I am closer.  Maybe 3 inches.

Here we go! I think it turned out quite nicely, though the wash treatment is subtle so kind of hard to see (though I think that's a good thing, it brings out the details without looking too woebegone. I will probably paint some more of the details later on, but for the moment I think it looks good!

The wash looks good Redshirt . 👍

Sometimes the paint is applied too heavily and instead of helping the look of some of these nice buildings it tends to make them lose their detail. 😕

Currently, I'm working on buying a smoke fluid applicator for my engines on the layout. The eye droppers work fine for some, but I need a needle point for my most recent acquirement. I should buy two so if I get a diesel, I don't spray the shell with fluid.

There was a tiny plastic funnel that came with my RK ps2 Triplex that works really well for any of my MTH steamers and diesels.                                                                                           It's easy to use and it goes well down into the smoke fill areas without a drop of smoke oil on the finish.                             I've never seen another one in all of my Premier or Railking packaging.

The funnel opening is only 20mm and the spout is about 13mm long and 3mm diameter. Total length is about 35mm.

Maybe some forumites might have an idea of how to get one from MTH or another model parts source for something similar.🤔
