I'm a huge Alco fan so I was delighted to see offerings of Schenectady's finest. The PA-1 warbonnets are way cooler looking than the EMD E's and F's IMHO. I also love the FA-2's with the lightning stripe. The best for me though was the Ohio Central GP-35, a "gotta have it". So my list will likely be as follows:

Santa Fe PA-1 ABA
Santa Fe 5 passenger car set
Santa Fe 2 passenger car set
Santa Fe RPO car
Ohio Central GP-35 (love it!!)
Santa Fe GP-35 (maybe)
NYC FA-2 ABA

I just hope that it doesn't hit a once, I could end up in the divorce court .

Well to be very honest I am disappointed with MTH this time around just like I was last time. I am 100 % MTH PREMIER Steam and Diesel but one more offering like this catalogue and I will be looking for another supplier.

The same thing is true on the rolling stock also.

I looked at Lionel’s Rolling stock and see some very nice offerings.

Tank Tran Cars in the original design PLUS CN and CIBRO and the NS.

AUTO Racks in CN AND GTW 24” long WOW

Grain Cars in Aluminum

No intermodal in either MTH or LIONEL

I think Lionel will be seeing most if not all my business.

Too bad for me in a way that MTH has moved in a different direction BUT IN ANOTHER WAY THEY ARE SAVING ME SOME MONEY. Thank you Mike Wolf, besides I don’t have any EURO’S to spend

As a long time supporter of MTH, I am dissappointed. They made their reputation by innovating and we all benefitted from that. It is my impression they have fallen behind Lionel.  In my opinion, the only reason to purchase a new rerun is to get improved electronics and sound. Where are you Mike?

I for one will not purchase anything from Mike until he fixes the poor quality sound set on the Premier steam locomotive that I refer to above.

There are at least 4 different soundsets for the Mohawk (2 freight, 2 passenger) that I'm aware of. I have an L4b, and I'm pretty sure at once point or another I've loaded them all into it. Some of them sound better than others. Eventually I settled on one of the passenger sound sets, even though I use it for freight because it had the best whistle (PFA announces train #10 "The Mohawk"). If you dont like any of them... load in a Niagara sound set.

The great thing about PS2 is that you arent stuck with the sound set it comes with (ask the Blue Comet people who had to send tenders to Lionel to be reprogrammed).

Very excited somebody is making the Amtrak heritage units! I'll probably get the Phase III version. However, I may risk it and not pre-order the engine. I still refuse to believe that Lionel would skip over these engines, especially with all of the heritage craze going on right now. I think I'll wait until the MTH engine arrives (March 2013)...about when Lionel's 2013 catalog is released, and if Lionel doesn't make them then I'll go with MTH. I need one of these, that's for sure!

I'm blown away by the 2013 MTH catalog Imperial offerings. I'm a huge fan of Imperial, it fits my tight curves, plenty of detail for me and the price is an incredible "value" to me. It is like they took my wish list and put it into life.  I'm overwhelmed. I favor Legacy for my own reasons but my money will be going to MTH this round. Hard part is which one to get first. I really lucked out this year...wow.

I'm probably in for a freight car or two. I like the AC&Y and P&WV units, though they are too modern for my layout.

As for the heritage rolling stock... In all honesty, I wanted to throw something at the computer screen upon seeing the horrendously ugly Black Nickel Plate Caboose. I hate it with a burning passion, and you couldn't pay me to put it on my layout. Some of the other ones look...ok, but I think they should have done something a bit more faithful to the historical look of each road.

Only 3 items have my interest but generally disappointed with MTH and Lionel.

Both companies are lacking fallen flags items offering mostly fantasy, steam or very modern items this time around.

Nothing from Lionel appeals to me either.

No northeast items, LIRR, PATH, MU Electrics or subways…

EL SD-45 - Guess I will have to buy the Lionel GP-35 EL dummy to run with this one.

CN PS-1 ?  should have been a combo door car

BCR PS-1 ?

Still waiting on items from well over a year ago.

Fortunately for me, there aren't a lot of items that will attack my wallet. I think I'm in for a pair of ATSF GP35's and a set of CNW AAR box cars. Thinking about the ATSF PA's and passenger cars the cars could do double-duty with my Blue Goose, but I have mixed feelings about the passenger cars as I've become further "corrupted" by my recent scale pursuits and would really like to see full-scale cars. Looks like I'll also need to stock up on Kadees.

If I was still running trains, there would be several things I would be getting. However, since I no longer have any trains, I won't be getting anything. I'm anxious about the up coming "S" Gauge catalog. However, I bet I place a order later this evening from another catalog. The name on it is Bass Pro Shops. I need some more top water lures.

Only one premier steamer. Think I will wait to get lionels daylight after they discount them a lot hopefully.the legacy operating system and legacy railsounds are IMO much better than ps3. I dont run dcc so ps3 is not that much different than ps2 was IMO. I may order a canadian pacific railking steel sided caboose to go with my lionel cp ten wheeler though. Thats about it.

Geez, between Lionel and MTH, this is an intense week:

  • The Imperial Big Boy - at that price I will take a chance it can replace my worn out LM Big boy. (A Railking Big Boy was the worst loco I ever had, going into the shop three times and never working despite that.  I owned it two years.  It ran well a total of maybe one week.  I ended up just giving it away.).
  • Flatcar with Edsels.  Edsels?  Yes!
  • European series 231 Chapelon.  My 241 Chapelon is the most detailed, beatufil model loco I have.  If this matches that jewel, it will be worth every penny.
  • The 2 track bridge in rust - I've been meaning to order this and I finally will.

And the scale GS-4?  Tempting, but I ordered the Lionel GS-2 earlier this week.  I will stick with that: the MTH GS-4 looks to be a good value at $200 less, but I already placed the Lionel order, and I expect the Legacy will have the better sound - worth the $200 higher price.  I'd buy it even if I had not already placed the order.

There was nothing in the Lionel catalog for me....

BUT in this catalog! OH BOY!!!

Milwaukee Road SW1

Milwaukee Road FP45

Milwaukee Road GP35

Burlington Northern SD45

Northern Pacific Reefer

Burlington Northern Hopper

Southern Pacific AAR Box

Chicago & Northwestern AAR Box

Even the CSX Cola Gondolas...I have a CSX Dash 8 and SD50's....and I see those kind of trains at Brunswick all the time. We'll see....

I guess there are no Premier diesel non powered units this time around or did I miss something? Would have liked a U.P. es44ac non powered. I like the S.P. boxcar 6 paks  and the S. P. passenger cars look tempting. I agree with SPSF on the FP45 fuel tanks should be updated and more scale. Time to check the train budget!!      Paul

Glad to see the GG-1's are back in the catalog... now we just need to see them on dealer's shelves.  But hey, seeing them in the catalog is definitely a step in the right direction.

I'm looking to acquire one of the Pennsylvania GG-1's with the Pennsy herald standing out from the single wide stripe... to double-head with one I recently purchased from Aaron's City Trains a few months ago.  Didn't like the $100 price increase though from when these same units were catalog'd in 2011 Vol 2.    What's THAT all about, Mike???

Maybe a couple of auto carriers and a schnabel car.  Those are always a hit.

Nobody said you have to buy them.  I really like the "fantasy" NYC caboose.

Not nice.....Just making an educated observation.

I'm considering both the Pennsy PA-1 set and the New Haven EP-5.  The big question I have is will they have the old style trucks with the idler wheels on the inboard end of the trucks like in previous editions, or will MTH use a truck like K-line used on their PA-1 and EP-5.

I ask this because I have a set of MTH Premier PA-1's (2004 Pennsy Brunswick Green) with the old style trucks.  I find that they have problems tracking, even on O-72 curves.
