Interesting idea.  I generally avoid modifying to add traction tires unless the loco had none to begin with: that's rather rare now.  In my experience converting to a traction tire(s) reduces electrical connectivity noticeably, and results in poorer running unless the loco is big and has many wheels (aND frankly,  locos like that don't seem to need help with traction anyway).  I generally just use frog-snot to make traction tires.  You do have to renew it every so often, but it is easy to use, requires no disassembly, and has the big advantage that you can remove it easily if you want to go back to original.

Lionel's first scale S2 Turbine sorely needs traction tires.  My firend had a tubular 072 layout and the scale turbine had significant problems pulling just a few aluminum passenger cars up a modest incline.  The drivers spun easily.

 

When Lionel introduced their second scale Turbine I asked if seperate drivers with traction tires would be available thru the parts department.  I was told only the complete chassis would be available.  And that was the case.

I have a first edition Lionel S2 Turbine that could definitely use traction tires to enhance the traction of this beast! I have the schematic for this engine but would like to know if any special tools are required to remove the wheels for groving. Which drive wheels would be the best candidate for this modification? Appreciate any comments.
