Started programing engines (TMCC and Legacy both) and the Legacy keypad went blank. Can't find any way to get it back. I can still tap the various empty number boxes and select engines.

I think he means there is nothing, nada, no numbers, no symbols.
My guess is you've had a genuine failure.
I'd try removing the batteries for a few minutes first, if that doesn't do it, put the batteries back in and press the recessed reset button on the back. Those are the only "restore" options I can think of to see if you can bring it back.
Those measures probably won't fix it, but they're worth a try before contacting Lionel.
