Seems like the Legacy Mogul and Milwaukee S3. Is that correct? Are there others?

Original Post

legacy moguls have RCMC boards and can be lashed up with any other engine with the same assuming the mechanics are in working order.

I doubt that you could pair the Legacy 0-8-0 from 3 years ago with any other Legacy locomotive. It did not have the same electronics and speed control.

Would that include F units then?

I would think so. I don't have any to try though. Keith gave an example of engine that doesn't have an RCMC. BMEC engines work on back emf, not a tach sensor. A handful of Legacy engines use this system, mostly smaller ones. They are like Odyssey engines that can really only get paired with themselves.

Any Legacy locomotive that uses the BEMF board will probably not play well with those equipped with the RCMC boards.  Any RCMC equipped Legacy locomotive "should" play well with other RCMC equipped locomotives.  I've also lashed up the older modular Legacy with the R4LC & DCDS with RCMC equipped locomotives successfully.

FWIW, only a handful of O-gauge Legacy have the BEMF board, I recall the LM Class-A, and the aforementioned 0-8-0.  There may be a couple others, but not many.  Lionel caught some flak for the BEMF, that was originally designed for America Flyer Legacy.

Remember, there were two runs of the 0-8-0 yard goats.  The 1st run (Without wire tethers.) have the RCMC boards and can be lashed up.  The 2nd run (With wire tethers.) have the BEMF boards and can't be lashed up.

The others that I know of with BEMF are the Heisler and the LioneMaster Class A.   Of note is that the Legacy Shays have the RCMC boards, but can't be lashed up with non-Shays due to gearing of the locomotives.  Other then that, as long as they are all setup as Legacy locomotives in your Cab-2, all other Legacy locomotives should run together, AFAIK.

Right, the Heisler was the one that I couldn't remember.  I knew of the Class A and the 0-8-0.  I have a Legacy Shay, but I never had the urge to MU it with something else.

Keith,

The Speed control from the DCDS and the RCMC match well.  The PCB board changes did not affect the servo speed profiles.  The one thing Lionel watches carefully is the speed matching profiles when PCBs change.  I designed the RCMC hardware and wrote the code, and I based the servo code directly  on the DCDS code.  The DCDS code was originally written by a very talented person under Lou Kovach of ICC controls fame.  I picked up the DCDS code when I joined Lionel in 2006, and refined it for production of the first Legacy Loco, the Big Boy.  So I can state for certain the servo for the speed controls matched on these PCBs from 2006 to present!

Original TMCC and BEMF versions of products cannot speed match to Legacy, but some compromises need to be made when locos are smaller.  Normally these locos that go off the "standard", are steamers.  These are less likely to lash up, especially yard goats, Heislers, etc.

I have MU'ed and older DCDS equipped Legacy with the RCMC equipped ones, they worked out great.  Of course, you're getting the scoop from the Horse's Mouth so to speak, I think you can take that to the bank.

I have a Shay as well and have never tried MUing it as I remember reading that they were geared different and thus couldn't be MUed with other locomotives.  Maybe I should give it try when I'm next assigned to take a week off.
