I have two PS-3 engines returning from MTH having been repaired. Not sure what was done by MTH.

On engine is an RS-3 that had worked fine when I received it but had a short in it when I tried to run it again after a period of inactivity.

a second engine is the H10s . Again it seemed to work fine when first used but afetr a period of inactivity  showed signs of erratic operation and non synchronization of the engine sounds with the wheel revolutions. While it was close to 4 chuffs per rev going forward, it would be 2 or less chuffs per rev going in reverse.  Also had difficulty in adding the engine into DCS the first time.

My question would be if after the MTH repairs, will these locos respond to the addresses now in my handheld or will it be necessary to delete the addresses now in the handheld and re add the engines as if they are new and for the first time being entered.

Thanks for your help and ideas.

I have two PS-3 engines returning from MTH having been repaired. Not sure what was done by MTH.

IF MTH did  factory engine resets, the engines will have to be added back to the dcs remote. They may even have a new ID number, If they repaired a broken wire etc ,  the engines  should still have their established ID numbers.

Engine IDs stick with the engine unless  .. edited to a different ID.     Factory reset (engine will add back at the lowest available open ID on the remote    and If the engine's ID has been taken up  with another engine in the remote  the engine will add back to the lowest  available  ID.

Maybe we should add... engine went in for repairs.

When you get the engines back try to start them up . If a no go , delete and add again.... 1 engine at a time on the programming track If you have one.

well I have the engines back from repair. The paper work shows the resolution for the RS-3 as Refurbish with the problem cause being wires . I tried this one out on the layout tonight and went to add engine and the remote message was that the Engine was found in the remote. Did scroll and found it in the inactive list. It started in DCS once i selected it from the menu.

The H10 s steam engine shows the cause oper-05 with resolution as Reprogram. Thinking that one will likely require the engine to be added anew into my DCS set. Will see what happens tomorrow. and post results here.

The H10 s steam engine was another story. Unwrapping the engine, I noticed a sticker with instructions on how to assemble the MTH wireless drawbar. It called out initially the importance of getting the wire spring on the drawbar on the right side of the square locating pin on the tender before making the plug in connection. Did that  and thought I had it right. The connection fixture on the tender moves from side to side and up and down. I had made mention of this in my note when I sent the engine back to MTH but it is still the same way so thinking that is the way it is supposed to be.

So off to the track. Scrolling up the voltage , the sounds come on before reaching my preference for 16 volts and after a few seconds , it decides it is in a conventional mode and starts running in reverse at mainline speed. Grabbed the engine and it stops dead on the track. Sound shuts down as if you turned it off.  Selected the engine from the handheld and used start up. No engine on track. Message  so start over  with the procedure. No response period. Deleted the engine from the list in the handheld and tried adding MTH engine no success. No Engine to add message So I figure maybe I didn't make up the drawbar connection properly. Back to workbench to check out and fiddling with it I could feel and hear he connector snap in.

Back on the track, scrolling up the voltage, it comes alive about 8 volts and starts running backwards again. Try adding the engine while its moving and that was successful however it went about hallway around the layout before I could hit the start button and gain control in DCS.

Once in DCS mode, All the functions worked correctly from the DCS handheld. Successive restarts showed the same come alive and run in reverse behavior. I have found that the engine will start and run  in DCS at about 8.5 volts so I have a workaround. . I tried to run the engine on a track without DCS in conventional mode but it seems to only run in reverse. Maybe there is a switch somewhere that corrects this operation.

Since I usually run in DCS mode, the conventional running issue is not a big deal for me but would like to correct it if I can. I don't think that I would want to go throught the expense and travail of having to ship this back to MTH again. I guess you could say a half of a loaf is better than none.

Thanks for all the responses to the thread. I wanted to share my experience with all and maybe someone has an idea on correcting the reverse conventional running issue with a simple fix.

Your engine shouldn't be starting in reverse in conventional mode.... There is no switch but the engine can be reset  conventionally with the bell & whistle combination... dig out the manual.... The engine should start in neutral in conventional mode.. In command the engine should remain dark and silent until addressed  with the remote.

I suppose if you can get the engine to start  in neutral in conventional (unlock the engine) you 're probably a little better off... Why the engine misses the dcs watch dog is a mystery, some have  posted the same experience many times with proto-3. The fix was moving some circuit board wires or something similar.... frustrating for sure.

Did this engine come back from MTH  locked in reverse???

Gregg

Yes it came back from MTH that way. I use the variable throtthe channel in the tiu As you scroll up the voltage, the engine sounds will start and after a few seconds, it starts running in reverse but the direction button has no effect. When I have the engine selected from the menu and press start, it stops and is in DCS mode . It then responds to all DCS commands.

Normally What I notice with PS-3 is that when you use the variable throttle , the sounds will start with the engine in neutral as you are scrolling up the voltage. The direction button has no effect on the engine in this mode until you select  the engine from the menu, press start and that message displays in the screen. Now its in DCS mode. and it will respond correctly to DCS commands iniated from the remote.

I tried it on a track with no TIU, just fed from a ZW. Applying voltage , it powers up and a few seconds later starts running in reverse. Kill the throttle,it stops. Raise the voltage again it starts running again in reverse. Its locked in reverse it seems. Was thinking there was a switch to lock the engine in one running position.

I will have to send for a manual. MTH doesn't seem to give you a manual in the box other than that 4 page fold out. Checked that and no info abbot locked in one run position.

Thank you for your reply.

ok I tried a factory reset , deleted the address from the handheld and then added the engine again. it is still behaving the same way and conventional running is locked in the reverse direction.

Barry I will look on line for the manual to see if there is any suggestions in there for the locked in reverse operation.

thanks for your help all.

If you do a factory reset with DCS the engine is automatically deleted from remote.  You can do a feature followed by factory reset.  If that does not resolve this motion in reverse in conventional, you then need to do the unlock procedure with a conventional transformer with bell and whistle button, or a conventional factory reset.  The sequence of Bell and whistle is in any manual for PS-2 or 3.  Timing is important.  G

Thanks G

I did the feature and factory reset in DCS mode. It did not resolve the  locked in reverse conventional running. My next step would be to try the conventional procedure you mentioned. Does the engine need to be in Neutral to use this procedure or can it be done while the engine is moving in reverse on the layout.

What is happening is that when I power up the track, the engine lights/sounds up and within a second or two starts running in reverse all by itself.  the direction button and dropping the track voltage to zero and subsequently raising it does not bring the engine into neutral position. Holding the direction button will bring the engine to a stop but once released it will resume running in reverse.

The engine was sent to MTH for repair of erratic operation in DCS and no conventional operation. Now it moves in reverse when power is applied to the track.

Thanks for your help on this.

Hello folks.

we were away for a bit but back now. Broughtt the H10s to my dealer and attempted the conventional reset procedure to unlock the sequence reverse. , whistle and 5 bells.

When we put this on the track, we expected it to run in treverse in a locked state. Well it ran forward in a locked state.

So tried again and now running in reverse in a locked state, slowed it down to just about stopped , voltage was pretty low, and tried the reset procedure three times using a z-4000. On the third try we received the whistle signal from the loco and it was now in neutral. It ran forward and backward using the transformer controls as it should . Shut it down and restarted it again and it again worked as it should so the reset seems to have restored the correct conventional operation.  The engine is back home again however I have not been able to try it in DCS yet. Had Eye surgery today . Thinking it should work in DCS ok now that the conventional problem is resolved.

Than you all o the forum here for your help and suggestions to help correct the conventional running issues with this engine. It is a beautiful model and looks great on the layout in action.
