A couple of weeks ago I was tinkering with some yard ideas and sought out some samples online. I found these three which are supposed to be ideal, functional, and real-world-like. I think that for the most part, some of us(me generally) would just run a spur and that was the yard. In my HO days, I was a little more creative, had a double mainline with spurs crossing over the mains to get to the yard, but it was still a single track(on one), and a fork(two) on the other.

So, my main question is what type of yard design do you follow? Do you have something were engines can pop on either side to set up cars in any order or move them out along to a different part(like the departure yard in the flat yard example), have maintenance/engine house/sanding/water/fuel facilities/shops/etc., etc?

I want a functional yard, one where I can build a small freight consist for a local leaving in either direction.  The overall plans allow the engine to leave in one direction and come back that same direction (out and back operation).  Below are a couple of yard designs I've done to try and fit as much as possible into the space I have.  Things I want for the freight yard:

-Arrival/departure track.

-Runaround track for access to each end of yard and steam and diesel tracks

-Yard lead

-At least three classification tracks (these have four), set on 4" center-to-center

-If possible, I also have an icing track and express car/diner tracks

Here is a schematic of the bottom yard.

I'm working on another design that has the freight yard and passenger station in different areas.

I use Ross switches to get the variety of sizes needed to do these designs.
