Its Easter break. Duh!

Not all areas have the same week for Easter break, Duh!

Many school districts lost east break due to all the cancelled days this winter, Duh!

College "Kids"... Florida where the girls are or York?... Duh!

The 30's and 40's crowd have to go to work so we can pay our taxes, Duh!

 

BTW, for all you Scaletrax folks, Just Trains of Delaware in the Purple hall had a decent amount at the show.  I picked up some 30" straights and some switches.  They told me they had even more back at the Shop.

 

I need some drawbars for a few scaletrax switches and was disappointed that the MTH parts people did not have them.  They told me I had to call and order those.

 

Other than that, my son and I enjoyed the show and we enjoyed meeting and talking with many of you fine people here on the forum.

Well I guess Thursday was the warmup and Friday was the real thing.  Everyone really willing to deal on Friday.  Pickup up a Proto 2 Premier Hudson from Vince's train and got a nice discount for an all cash transaction.  Found a NIB Premier NYC Aluminum 5 car passenger set to go with the Hudson.  Got a little discount on set but he threw in the observation car that went along with it for free so right around 300 for 6 cars.  I thought I was done but while hanging out with friends in the Purple hall some guy had a few Premier Proto 3 engines NIB.  My friend was kinda looking at one and the guy just says you like it half off of the sticker.  With that comment I start looking now and we talk him into a good deal if we both bought one.  So my big deal was a Pennsylvania J-1 2-10-4 for $575.  Fired up both engines this morning and they both work and sound great.   

I attended Thursday afternoon as I have ever since they expanded.  I only attend during April since I almost always spend October in the West Virginia mountains hiking, hunting and trout fishing.  Anyway, I really did not think the crowds were any less sparse this year as compared to those in the past since they expanded the meet.  I like attending on Thursday since it is a lot easier to navigate through the aisles in all of the halls.  The orange hall was not overrun with people but it never is on Thursday.  There were good prices at Sidetrack Hobbies and Nassau Hobbies but I chose not to bite.  The non-dealer halls as always were more more crowded.  My take was very light.  I purchased a couple of N&W dvds, a couple of American Flyer and Marx Litho stations, and some O Gauge tubular track.  The weather was great and I enjoyed myself thoroughly and then I headed out to West Virginia to do some serious Spring Gobbler hunting.

My very first York.  Peter (Putnam Division) was gracious enough to let me ride up with him.  I had a great time!  Met some great people, and the show itself ... awe inspiring and/or overwhelming, I'm not sure which.

 

I was able to begin assembling an intermodal train, got a couple of reasonable deals on some excellent condition MTH cars.  I also bought an ETD truck for my coal train and some coal from Dennis Brennan to improve the MTH plastic coal loads.

 

I hope to come again sometime soon... and I think my wife wants to come as well!

I didn't buy much, since I have taxes to pay and that has left me selling much more than I bought.

1)I picked up 3 MTH Premier High Cube Boxcars from Just Trains.

2) American Flyer (Interstate) to convert to O-gauge. That won't be happening. I can't get around the ladders and other details on the bottom of the car--so look for it on the Buy Sell Forum tonight.

3)MTH York car and a couple of other MTH Club cars from the MTH Booth

4)A big find for me over in Orange Hall- MTH Ives Circus Water Car--I have looked for one of these the last several Yorks and I finally found one.

5)Railking C&O Chessie Diecast Hoppers (6 car set). I was hoping to find these. I tried to talk them down and the guy said "you don't understand what these are." I replied yes I do this was one of the items I came here looking for.

Finally got my "Haul" inspected and stored away. Have to leave it all with relatives in NY until we return with our RV in May.

 

This was my biggest purchase of the meet. Full 3rd Rail / GGD 1948 20th Century Limited, like new in the boxes. Technically not actually bought there but I believe the seller was going to bring it to sell had I not made the deal prior. Transacted in the parking lot before the meet opened. Thanks so much again Lou!

 

 

And my biggest find at the show itself. Been looking for this one for a long time. Lionel 18063 Dark Grey Commodore Vanderbilt. A seller in the Brown Hall had it buried under a pile of other Commodores and I almost missed it. He said they were part of an estate he bought out. Absolutely mint, still sealed in the original shipping carton and cellophane. Marked at $595 and $550 accepted. As far as I know it was the only one at the show. I couldn't be happier. 

 

Picked up a CAB1L set that I had preordered and two Lemax amusement rides for $25.00 each.

Since Malcolm has completed my Pacemaker caboose the rest of the train is next on the radar, i.e. MTH's Premier L-4a Mohawk and Pacemaker AAR Boxcars. I did find two of the boxcars new at the Public Delivery Track booth. There were four more at the booth across from them but they had blemishes and no boxes so I skipped. I also saw one of Atlas O's special runs of that boxcar in the Blue Hall but couldn't stomach the $78 price tag. After those I didn't see any others at the show. Vince's Trains actually had the Mohawk at a fair price but alas, I was tapped out! 

 

For me it's all Post War all the time. I'm building a 1950s Lionel Display type layout and my York quest was for the many PW accessories that go on the layout. Found some great stuff, in nice condition at decent prices,

Nice pictures Nick,  Glad you finally got the CV that you've been looking for.  BTW, that has to be the world's fastest 20th Century Ltd... 3 diesels pulling a single observation car - WOW!!!

I was able to find everything on my list.  A first I think.  I got the buildings I wanted at Korber Models, a building kit and new Blu Ray disk at the OGR booth.  Some scenic supplies at Scenic express.  19040's era trucks for my roads at Diecast Direct and figures at Artistta.  A good haul this time around.

 

Nick, I see you tried some scrapple.  Yummy for the tummy, right?

I gotta admit, it was yummy. The tummy though... 

Only had room to photograph the "main" elements of the set today. All the passengers in the other 11 cars will get the full treatment when I get them back home in May!

 

With the Pacemaker boxcars, it'll be as many as I can find. MTH made 38 unique road numbers of the specific cars needed for the project. Gotta collect em' all naturally. Don't tell me you're looking for those too now. Man, I gotta stop giving out my ideas and creating market competition for myself 

I went through the BIG TWO catalogs really fast, and only saw one boxcar of passing interest...found small items wanted at an open show, found more but pricey and

passed, the first two days...same for a loco I wanted....but Saturday, I got my deal on the loco and a few more of the small parts, so it was worth the stayover.  Nothing

"new" of interest...But in an open show I saw one truly RARE set Tuesday that I would have gladly sprung half the asking price, but kept walking.  As usual in recent Yorks,

unlike, say, ten years ago, I spent very little on trains.

Still annoyed to see that G scale Mack railbus bus in the Orange Hall, while orphan

O-gaugers do without.

I only went on Saturday (due to my work schedule), and I was kinda disappointed. Sellers were complaining loudly, and I honestly think that's why crowds got a lot smaller as the day went on (not that they were big to begin with). By 11, sellers were already packing up. By one, tables were bare, or only had a couple trains, since the announcements now say that sellers must keep SOME product on their table.

 

In spite of this, I did pick up my Glenn Snyder Shelves, some parts, on and this...

 

 

 

The Ives 1708 cattle car I have spent 3.5 years looking for! I had to buy the whole Ives set (not in a condition I want), but I figure I can sell that and just keep the cattle car. This alone was worth the trip.

I just was at York this year... Haven't been since 2006... It seems like it wasn't as busy as in years past.  Is this true?  I have no way to gauge.  I do miss the days before the orange hall (1998 when i joined) when the grandstand was being used and tents were in front for various manufacture's displays.  It felt more raw and authentic.

I still remember when lionel displayed their 5 phase oddessy motor in the Union Pacific turbine with a jumbotron outside and when mike was demonstrating the just new DCS system.  Big changes were happening then.  It seems like now there is more emphasis on scale stuff now.  Back then tons of postwar accessories were being released by both lionel and mth.  I have a fondness for cool accessories.  I have no need for box cars 21" long... . I will definite get the command control tiejector and crane.

My wife really scored at the bandit meets. She picked up 20 reproduction Hornby cars and 3 wind-up engines (all new) for $100. At least this time around she did not outspend me. My find was 4 new Atlas Master undecorated pulpwood flat cars for $17.50 each.

Unfortunately I have a York tale of woe, not that I did not have a great time meeting old friends and new ones, got to see some great modual layouts, see new products and attend the O gauge forum meeting in the grandstands, but I walked the entire show looking for either a Lionel Legacy k4 6-11264 or 6-11265 with no luck. I just missed one at Vince's Trains. I usually only go to the Orange, Brown and Purple Halls but this time went to all including White, Blue, Silver, Black. In the white hall there was a great modual Layout by the Pittsburg High Railers with some real impressive trains running.

 

Once again let me know if you are selling a Lionel Legacy K4 either 6-11264 (1361) or 6-11265 (1330) and you will save my feet some walking.

Anthem played on Thursday before show and Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood played Friday before show.  I was right outside the Orange Hall both days.

I always start at the White Hall. Maybe the speakers don't work over there.

A couple of people waiting to get also commented there was no anthem.

Glad to hear that is was played.

The national anthem was indeed played at the Thursday noon opening.

 

My "haul" this time ranked among the most limited ever.  George Seil, of our crew, found me a new-in-box Lionel quonset hut for $20, and I'll soon be ordering about a half dozen of the new quonset hut kits being offered by the fine folks at Korber (thanks Rich and crew).

 

I had my eyes on a few other things, but decided to hold off in favor of a Large Scale locomotive that I plan to order this coming week.

Saturday was Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America."

Had a great York. Got lots of great stuff. Visited with all my buds. Met lots of new train nuts.......Post York was a trial.  I got word that my Dad was back in the hospital in Monticello NY. So, I arranged a transfer.........my wife came up to Baltimore on Amtrak and I put USMC_Chris on the train back to Richmond..........we drove to NY.

 

During the scurrying around Baltimore Penn Station in the rain, I must have dropped my IPhone.  I realized it at dinner about an hour after it happened......I fired up my IPad and using the "find my IPhone" feature, I located it in South Baltimore, about 10 miles from the station......I immediately erased it remotely.

 

Just got back and started unpacking........thankfully, everything is cool in NY.

My big haul was the WBB Amtrak Genesis Phase IV AA set at Trainworld for $160.How can you beat a nice new train for that kind of money? A sweet runner.

 

I bought a couple of MTH passenger platforms, and a MTH pedestrian overpass. I want to bash these together to add two passenger stops to my Elevated Line.

 

Also got some NADA from Mega Steam and the little bottle with the needle for precision delivery of the smoke fluid.

 

Found a new Alaska MTH Railking steel cabeese to go with the MTH Premier SD70s I bought a few years back...the Alaska caboose had proved quite elusive.

I violated the First Law of York, not once but three times. When you think you see something you like, and the price is reasonable, buy it.  I lost out on a MTH corrugated auto car, a caboose, and a double stacked intermodal all because I thought I might save $5 "in the next hall."  So much for my plan to walk all the halls once then go back and pick up the items I liked.

 

....I fired up my IPad and using the "find my IPhone" feature, I located it in South Baltimore, about 10 miles from the station......I immediately erased it remotely.

 

Geez, I don't consider myself that old but that sounds very James Bond.  I must still be stuck in the 1990's.  I still have a dumb phone.  I don't even think the provider could find it if I asked.

Congrats on all your purchases, Nick. Definitely a great bunch you got. I didn't happen to find an 18063 when I went, but I doubt I could afford it anyways...

 

Got a real kick in the Orange Hall seeing the great pieces both MTH and Lionel had for later this year. BTW, 3D printing is awesome, Lionel!

 

Weather was fantastic, got to wear my favorite Conrail T-shirt. Unfortunately, driving home SUCKED. Too many people, Friday night, and too many roads under construction equaled a 2 hour delay getting home...

Lionel seems to be on the leading edge of technology in many areas.

I didn't even go to York, but still scored a needed item. Wayne Sheriff went to see Trickel in the orange hall for me and got the Ives 3260 frame I am in need of. I don't even know what it cost me yet, but he said he got it so I'm happy.

This was my 20th York Meet ... and it was fun as usual.  I spent more (mainly at Nassau Hobbies from friends Charlie and Chris) at this York than any in the past 4-5 years.  Not sure why, but some new Lionel product as well as some old grabbed my attention.  In addition to the new, I found a K-Line WP Mikado (w/TMCC) at an exceptional price plus some other "old" goodies.

 

BTW, I hope many of you were able to snatch up some of Nassau's Lionel Legacy locs on sale.

 

I still maintain - after 10 April and 10 October Yorks - that there is little difference between the two meets.  Sales here.  Sales there.  The difference for me has been in the pre- and post-Meet activities because of the seasons.  I'd like to hear from York veterans (20+ Meets) on this question.

Part II - I really enjoyed the layouts (Black - White - Orange Halls).  The BEST ever that I've seen at York.  Great idea for ED to move in this direction.

Well, came home with a little more than expected.

I planned on getting the MTH York boxcar and some parts to finish restoring the trains I got from the estate sale a couple of weeks prior. That task accomplished...



...I noted that I was up for renewal in the MTHRRC. So I did. And my club car was already waiting. My first example of one of these high-riding PS2 hoppers.


Started buying parts. The 3357 Cop & Hobo car from the estate sale shows off its "new" AAR trucks (I polished the wheels). Both were replaced since the coupler pivots on both the original trucks were chewed up. J&K supplied the body screw that now holds the frame to the shell. 


Back in Orange hall, I found the missing ladders for my 6457 at TrainWorx. Elsewhere I found a staple-end truck to replace the busted coil coupler truck that stood in for what was no doubt a broken original. J&K in Purple Hall also had the missing body screws that now secure the shell to the frame. I won't reconnect the light since the wire is shot. I plan to stick some LED's in here instead.



Elsewhere in Purple Hall, I found a pair of Kusan/KMT flatcars at Kim's Trains. I was looking for the trucks by themselves (for the estate-sale boxcars). I found maybe a dozen complete (or nearly so) Kusan cars across the entire show, but no trucks. Looking as forlorn and unloved as these two did, I "adopted" them.


Second of the pair. The cars appear to have been equipped with Lionel wheelsets, which shined up nicely with some Nevr-Dull. Did Kusan/Kmt equip any of their rolling stock with metal wheels? I'm thinking no, since they were 2-rail as far as I know.



One more shot of the flatcars, showing the as-bought condition (foreground), and what soap/water/spritz-of-Pledge plus some Nevr-Dull on the wheels will do. I think they cleaned up nicely.



A friend of mine picked up this Kusan/KMT gondola for me in Red hall, the intent being I could strip it of its trucks for the estate-sale boxcars. I briefly considered doing this myself, but thought "And then I'll have this perfectly good gondola looking at me without any trucks". So it got added to the collection as a complete piece. I didn't even have to clean it

 

Last up were this MTH Premier Conrail crane...

 

...and its companion boom tender.

 

I gotta tell ya, I had forgotten just how big the Premier crane is. It's huge (click the pic for the full effect). I placed it next to the 2460 postwar crane I got from the estate sale, and the latter contracted an inferiority complex. That I forgot to purchase a replacement for its missing hook while I was at York didn't help matters any.

 

Finally, my biggest purchases at this show--electronics. The two DCS upgrades are going in my two DDA40AX's (I had one, bought a dummy unit, then bought another powered one to help haul the dummy around :eek

 

From All Aboard Trains in the Orange Hall, I picked up a pair of ERR DC Commander TMCC kits. They're most likely going in my two Lionel L&N GP38's, last seen on YouTube hauling a 33-car train of 027 autoracks

 

Last but not least was my big parts run. Actually it was a big parts stop, since J&K Trains in Purple Hall had everything I needed for this pair of 2343 shells found in Red Hall. I passed them up initially because I was looking for complete shells, which I had been told were quite common. I did see quite a few shells--but they were all married to chassis, motors and trucks. Redundant and expensive.

 

I was about to resign myself to having the beater shells I had sent to a restorer (or biting the bullet and getting a PayPal to shop Ebay) when my friend alerted me to the shells I had passed up, reminding me that I could buy whatever missing parts my shells didn't have. Once I started picking out parts at J&K, I elected to just get  all the trim pieces needed so I wouldn't have to involve the original shells. Oh, and got the sideframe mounting screw for that rear power truck while I was at it.

 

Not shown are some Evans Designs warm-white LED's that I plan on mounting in at least one of the units. I got 3mm for the headlight and 1.8mm for the number boards.

 

So this York was rather productive. For the first time I had to closely eyeball postwar stuff in the member halls, enough so that I actually needed both days I was there to find everything.

 

...except those pesky Kusan trucks.

 

The two Kusan boxcars with a missing truck were handled as follows. One got the other's truck, so now it's a runner. The donor, left without any trucks, received a pair of Lionel AAR trucks that I drilled out the bolsters to fit it. The car can be run, but sits about 1/4" too high on the postwar trucks.
