I always figured that since you can't see the prototype subways, you don't need to see the models. A good subway model might consist of a number of staircase entrances to the subway system below, some signs directing model people to the right subway line and then maybe some subway sounds coming up through the vents or air returns.
So who needs to spend the money for the operating trains when you can't see them?
Check out the Subway/Transit/Trolley forum for some ideas. There is one member, Joe P modleing the 125th St IND station and if the third rail was in the right place you wouldn't be able to tell his model from the real thing.
