Here is the 1957 catalog track plan updated with Fastrack.   Return loops have been added, additional yard tracks, and grades have been reduced to maximum of 4%.   The outer route is now O-48 minimum diameter with O-72 curves under the mountain.

The two routes have now been separated for continuous running, with cross-overs between the two routes.   The inner route can run the bent-oval past the yard, or the new return-loop to return-loop route, or the small oval.

The two 5X9 platforms are now at different heights:  2" higher on the left hand 5X9.   This helps to moderate the maximum grade to 4%, and makes for a more interesting layout.

Access is a problem in the original design, with two 5X9 tables.   Much is out of reach if placed in a corner.   Sacrificing the mountain for an access area gives easy reach for the yard turnouts and more.   Perhaps the access area can be reached with a low chair or stool on wheels, so one can sit down and scoot underneath the layout to get to the access area.

Jim - about the original Lionel accessories.   Sure, a good number of the original accessories can fit in, but I have not made a study of it.   There is more space to widen the yard to fit accessories between the tracks as needed.   The small hill above the Menard's station (which is huge compared to the original Lionel accessories) can be deleted for more structures (as can the Menard's station).   So yes, I think that nearly all of the original accessories could be made to fit, if that is the desire.

I had in mind the idea of pulling the layout into a more sustainable (sustaining the operator's interest) track plan with more operation options and interest using modern ideas about track planning (like the O-48 loop, many O-60 turnouts, the moderated grade to 4%, reverse loops, separated main lines with cross-overs, better access), and bringing the terrain and structures into a more modern look.   But there is no reason why the plan could not stay with the original vision of a flat table-top with accessories - more like a Lionel display layout look.   That also is a very cool and attractive look/design.

I think the original assumed that there would be 360-degree access all around the layout.   Making the 9X14 plan needing like a 14X20 space.   Few folks have that kind of space, and if they do, would want to look at alternative track plans like around-the-room and other ideas.   So access is a consideration when the layout will have to be up against a wall or in a corner for most of us.   The tilted version needs 11X16 space including the aisles, and provides pretty good access, just one spot hard to reach.

This variation is an improvement with realignment at the lower left corner under the elevated trestle, the two turnouts have been pulled back so that they are now flat, no longer part of the grades, and the connection from the lower left to the O-36 loop that creates a reverse loop, is now a straight section without the very minor reverse curves (7.5-degree O-48 sections removed).   The two grades (one at 4% and one at 2%) will now be easier to build.

With this realignment, the only turnouts on a grade are the three O-60s and one O-48 at the yard throat, which are on a 2% grade leading down to the 0" under the elevated trestle.

There two ways to do a "grand tour" route of the entire layout: one starts at the yard.  Pretty cool for a long run.  If you switch the industries along the way, that will keep you busy for a while .

In this version, I added a ridge on the far right to support the line to the elevated trestle.   With the raised platform on the left 2" higher, there is now a nice valley between the left platform and the ridge which the streams flow through.  The valley floor with the yard is 2" below the rest of the layout, which is 96" scale, or 8 feet.   The streams and pond will be carved-out at bit deeper than the valley floor for more elevation difference.   Not a deep valley, but a shallow valley that is clearly differentiated from the higher elevations, for an interesting overall terrain theme for the layout.   Put some swimmers, or canoes ,or a rowboat on the pond.   A fisherman could go alongside one of the streams.

On this next version, I worked in three of Lionel's operating accessories.   And I found room for three short tunnels, as the original design has a long one.   I made an indent at the bottom so a person can squeeze in to access the yard and terrain.

Lionel:  Coal Unloader, Milk Can, Cattle Pen, Barrel unloader, Suburban Station, Work House with sounds, Yard Tower, Oil Derrick, Rotary Beacon.

Menards:  City Block, Station, Morton Salt, Hobby Shop, Moe's Quonset Hut Garage.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

I was able to work in two pairs of O-72 turnouts for the two cross-overs connecting the two routes.   These were pairs of O-60 turnouts.

And the connection between the lower loop past the yard up to the O-36 oval is now more gradual, with an O-60 turnout and wider curves, easing the reverse curve from the turnout.

Here is just the track with product numbers:  If you want to view the small section numbers, I suggest that you download the picture (its a .jpg) and then open it in your photo viewer or some other software, so you can zoom.

Hello Ken, Ive been eyeballing your threads on your wonderful track plans, and I was wondering if I sent you a pic of my layout, you might piddle around with a track plan that accommodates the NYC between the Park Ave. tunnel and Harmon, where electrics deliver trains to the awaiting steamers for there trip up the Hudson......not sure if you do that sort of thing, but figured I ask, thanks ......beautiful work you do with those layouts!..............Pat

Brad, let me re-generate the list of track components, in case I made small changes.
