Paul, the hatch w/the fans lifts up from the rear.  You have to try to get your finger on the rear edge of the fan hatch & lift up.  There are clips on the front edge of the hatch, so don’t try to lift from the front edge. It was hard the first time, but am able to lift off the hatch now w/not to much effort.   Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, Craig. Just made it back home and got a chance to get my F40PH on the tracks. Since the rear of the hatch still didn’t seem to want to budge, and I was scared of marring the paint, I decided to run a piece of carpet thread through the two eyebolts at the back of the hatch, and, with a little upward pressure, it came loose - and the paint job is completely intact!!! Thanks again

Carpet thread is a fairly heavy and strong thread. I believe it was originally meant for use in sewing two pieces of carpet together. I found it many, many years ago when I was building a Revell plastic model of the USS Constitution - it was perfect for the standing and running rigging. It is made by Coats and Clark who have been making all sorts of thread forever. If there is a Joann’s near you, they carry it. Probably any store that carries sewing notions (now that term should really take you back!!!) would have it. Apparently, due to it’s strength, it is also good for attaching buttons.

This great thread for wiring your telephone and power lines.. Forest green or black... just the right thickness,  looks great, and realistic....

FOR TODAY: While some regions of the country experience mild winter weather, the Mountain Division of the Free State Junction Railway is experiencing single digit temperatures and lots of drifting snow.  Here we see a rotary plow and a flanger at work.  MOW workers struggle with a pick up truck load of supplies.  Baby it's cold outside .... burrrrr!  ... and it's just another day on the railroad!

Thanks Paul'..  She is an AMERICAN DIORAMA girl.  They claim O scale, actually, they measure out to be 1:40.  Placed in the correct scene they will blend with 1:43 & 1:48 figures...

The cars, all different brands, mostly from DieCast Direct'...None are Brooklyn models...

FOR TODAY:  A day off from school brings these young railfans to the mountain top.  Waking at the crack of dawn,  John Boy Critchett and Lumpy Larson have been climbing this steep trail for about an hour and 20 minutes now.  The steep grades of the trail has the boys working up a sweat and a thirst! They've already gone thru one and a half canteens of water!  Once they reach the top their big payoff will be to watch trains on the Mountain Division.  Both boys have brought their new Kodak Instamatic cameras and lots of extra film, plus plenty of sandwiches made their moms.  Of course they will disobey the "Railroad Property Keep Out Sign" because they plan to do no harm and will set up a safe distance from the track.  " After all we are just a couple of young guys who love trains!" Lumpy exclaims.

The payoff! A train rolls by!

The old Kodak Instamatic 104 camera!  I still have mine.  I used it to take some photographs of the B&O a half-mile hike from home way back when!  😊  John Boy and Lumpy had a great day for it too, so I see!!!

Mark -I figured there would be some of us who remember the Kodak Instamatic ... lol !   I had one too but it's long gone.  Great that the B&O was only a half mile from your house.   The B&O is my favorite railroad

FOR TODAY:  Yes Coach Joe, you are correct!  The winter storm pounds the Free State Junction Railway as this RDC's pilot confirms.  This commuter train has been plowing snow for many miles ... just another day on the railroad!  

FOR TODAY:  A B&O freight highballs through town. ... just another day on the railroad!

FOR TODAY:  A B&O Atlantic stopped for a red signal.

FOR TODAY:  A new acquisition: A custom Reading F3 using a K line body. chasis, and trucks with MTH Proto sound 3.  Wonderful sound and smoke.  The multi chime horn sounds terrific ... much better than the MTH single chime! !  This locomotive will replace my Williams by Bachman Train Master which will be up for sale soon.  

Reading is one of the railroads I model since it had trackage rights over certain parts of the Western Maryland Railway.  The Western Maryland Railway and the Reading were two of the railroads which comprised the Alphabet Route.  The F3 locomotive will look great pulling a mixed locomotive consist of Alpha Jet locomotives and their respective freight trains.

Patrick, very nice find! K-Line made some nice stuff! You're model has individual coil springs on the truck, and when was the last time you saw rear view mirrors/number boards on an O scale F series model? That is such a cool model and a fantastic addition to your already great layout! Enjoy!

Thanks so much Scott!  Yes K - line made some very fine models.  This F3 is well detailed as you keenly observed.  I'm grateful to have it as part of my locomotive fleet.  K - lines high end passenger cars were absolutely gorgeous as is shown proof  by your Zephyr train set cars.  Their 15 inch cars are amazing.  I have the KCC 15 inch observation in chrome,  a 15 in heavy weight B&O coach, Pullman diner, and a B&O 18 inch coach ... lovely cars!  I'm one of the many of us that wishes K line were still around.
