Those things would pull like nobody's business even without the slugs, too.  We used them in Conway as both hump power (with slug) and pullout job power (usually without) and routinely pulled 100+ cars with a single unit.  Granted we were running restricted speed- but they sounded sweet digging in with a heavy train!
