Believe it or not I actually ran my first train using TMCC about three weeks ago.  I just never took the opportunity to use this feature.  Now that I realize how straight forward it is I have a few questions that I hope are pretty basic.

  1. What is the best way to get a locomotive to start in reverse under TMCC?  Is this a program function or should I just reverse the leads to the motor like I have done for conventional locomotives I want to start in reverse?
  2. When running multiple powered units, what is the best way to synchronize them?  Is this a program function or could I get away with programming the units to the same number and therefore sending the same command signals to both.

It is completely obvious now of how much of a newbie I am at just basic TMCC.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback.  Time to get educated!  I'm in the process of changing shells on a dummy 2 rail Amtrak FL9 with a powered 3 rail New Haven one.  Long story, but I want back to back Amtrak ones to pull my growing scale Amtrak cars.  Once I get the two shells swapped, I will be figuring out the rest.  It is not as easy as I thought.

I ran the single powered unit under TMCC at the Paradise and Pacific a few weeks back using the Legacy controller and it was fun.  I have used DCS over there for a few years, but I am not an expert there either.  To make it more fun, I am gong DCC at home.

Sinclair - I'm in Phoenix.  Been here 21 years and don't have any plans to go anywhere even if I wanted to!

John - It is funny.  I am not technologically adverse.  I am actually the opposite most of the time, just a little slow when it comes to learning all the features my trains have.

George - love those K4s.  I have one Williams K4 I would like to upgrade, but my two Sunset 2R ones along with my 2r Rivets on are the priority list for DCC upgrades first.

Jonathan, TMCC is indeed a whole lot of fun. Very easy to use but like anything else takes a bit of time, reading and experimenting to get the most out of it. A very enjoyable path; each day you will discover something new you can do with TMCC.

I find it very difficult to sync and run TMCC engines as an MU. I am hoping someone posts a reliable way to do this that I have not discovered. There are variables in each engine such as if it has cruise control and what type.

Legacy and DCS systems make running MU's simple and easy. I know that does not help with the TMCC but if you really like to run MU's I find this the only way to reliably do so.

Jonathan,

I've had success running my two K4s in double headed and snapper (pusher) configurations.

Back in 2011, I held an open house (called it a "Train Smoker") for around 20-25 people.  Everybody (short of toddlers and infants) ran trains using TMCC with about 10 seconds of instruction.  We ran two trains simultaneously around the layout.  As far as I can tell, everyone had a blast.

Attached is my cheat-sheet, which I had laminated.  Almost no one read it.  But in it are key sequences for the common TMCC commands.  Enjoy!

Hi New to TMCC Command, My advice, is Order the Video from OGR Magazine, named

TRAINMASTER CONTROL, Narrated by Rich Melvin and he does a Super Job of teaching the TMCC Command System.  Also, get the Video of "TRAINMASTER CONTROL AND BEYOND" as this gives you even more advice on how to really control Your Trains.

With this system, You can really have a super time running Your entire Layout.

You can apply all of this to the new Legacy System as well.

Enjoy Your new World of Operating Your Scale Model Trains...
