I saw an ad for a local estate sale that said "Lionel trains", so I figured I would check it out. It was mostly MPC stuff but they had a 6-28036 Southern Pacific Consolidation NIB. I bought that, as I have been looking for either a scale SP Consolidation or Mikado. I model the AT&SF with a bit of SP mixed in, so this fit perfectly. I got it really cheap. Out of the box the smoke unit didn't work. Turns out, after some testing, the triac on the R2LC was damaged from the factory. I had a spare R4LC so I swapped that in and it works great.

The smoke output is anemic vs my other steam locomotives (all MTH Premier), but that's to be expected from a puffer unit. The 1 chuff a revolution is a bit bothersome as well. I can see this locomotive getting either a fan driven smoke unit, Cruise Commander, super chuffer, chuff generator combo or a PS3 upgrade at some point.

Lou, It looks great!  It looks like a great candidate for the proposed upgrades!!

Thanks. Should be fun either way I go. But it runs, and for now that's good enough.

I've got to get the Premier Santa Fe Blue Goose Hudson I have running first. I bought it back in June. It's brand new but all the electronics are gone (don't ask where I got it I can't say). I'm waiting on a PS3 steam kit to arrive at my LHS to get it running. Once the Blue Goose is done I'll tackle this project. Or add it to my middle of winter and nothing else to do list...

Picked up a couple of Postwar items off Ebay and a very good price and a piece at a local auction at a great price. Got less than $500.00 in all four pieces.

Local auction: Lettering needs restored other wise in good condition.

EBay: No battery damage or ny other issues I can find in great condition.

EBay No battery damage in really great shape

EBay: No battery damage mount screw cracks pretty much all PW FM's other wise in really great condition. Been hunting this one for years at a price I would pay.

Went to the Hamburg meet this past Sunday. Bought some nice looking Lionel pw 400 and 404 Budd cars at a decent price. The dealer who sold me the 400  said it runs perfect (yea.... checks in the mail) . First thing I did as usual when I got them home was take them a part to check out the electrical, clean the grease out, re-grease and oil them. The 400 had two wires off the motor and the 404 had one wire off the motor, at the price I paid for both, no biggie. After doing the maintenance they now run like new.

Trussman,

Glad that you found the problem easily, the two issues you found are quite common and easily fixed, almost a fun project. It is a good idea to open and at least lube used train purchases prior to use anyway.

I always avail myself of the test tracks at shows. If the item works, great. If not, time to negotiate if post or pre-war (as these are easily fixed and parts are available.

If modern and not working, I'd look for another if you want all of the advertised functions

Another preorder came in. Lionel REA baggage car. I'm going to use it at the end of my Fast Mail Express train, since it has rear marker lights. Between this, the SP Consolidation, and the freight sounds refrigerator that came in a few weeks ago my train budget is tapped till next year, especially with the holidays coming up in a few months.

Nice engine, Bob (I have the same one also)... command, eh??? Do I see a Legacy system in your near future??? Best stay away from football for a while

yes Paul- a Command and a DCS system are in my future. probably get the Cab-1 first since I have more Lionel engines.

LOU1985, wow, beautiful RPO Railway Express Car, wondering which Lionel catalog this was pictured in? It’s nice, and has the marker lights. I have the Louisville & Nashville RPO baggage car but it doesn’t have the marker lights, but under the car description, it Indicated it would have the marker lights. My car is pictured in the 2018 Lionel Catalog, page 44. There is a place under the car saying on and off switch. Just curious.

RSJB, Bob, that’s a hum dinger of a beautiful diesel, D&H Blue/Silver, and your going to enjoy moving it around your layout with a Cab 1/Cab 1L/ Cab 2....Enjoy.

RJT-Rick, all I can say is that’s a cool catch, post war engines that look so good. Thanks for the pictures...

Vincent, Merry Christmas in September, beautiful car, thanks for posting.

The REA Baggage car (not a RPO like your car) was in the 2019 V1. I wasn't planning on running it at the rear of the train but with it having rear marker lights it's easier to do that then add them to the Atlas Santa Fe  combine that originally was the last car.

I thought only the baggage cars came with rear lights and the RPOs didn't  but I could be wrong.

Bob, that paint scheme is one of the best out there, I think!  Looks great!

Thanks Mark- I should change the name of my RR from RSJ&B to D&H. I've got enough motive power and cars now to take over the layout. Still have a set of Baldwin Sharks that I haven't taken out of the boxes yet.
Yes one of the best paint schemes around.
