Hi all,

I got the two Lionel tank cars shown below back in March or so via early order through Charles Ro.  I just love them. They are part of my modeling efforts of the contemporary Norfolk Southern line in Ayer, Mass.   The only drawback is that they seem to tip over a lot when going over my MTH switches.  They usually drag and spark a bit before I can stop the engine. What a mess it's made of the track and wheels.  It's a good thing I bought a Kinsmart Fire and Rescue emergency vehicle at CVS.

Friday after work I went to Mr. Ro's in person.  Sadly, I missed out on the Steel City Beer and Heinz Katsup reefers they listed for sale -- maybe one of you got lucky and are enjoying them?  My plan was to combine the two boxcars with a switcher to model my other time and place -- intermodal railroad-barge operations in the greater Pittsburgh area.  Only the 1991-2 Lionel 44-Ton Switcher was available when I called that AM.  As others have pointed out here in previous posts, the model is 'way out of proportion and more like an 80-tonner. But boy can that thing move!  It just flies around my track so fast that I don't dare move the transformer dial beyond half way for fear that it will become airborne!  So, the size is obnoxious (as is the placement of the handrails and the steps that go nowhere), but the model makes up for it in play value.  I love the simplicity of the electronics, too.

As a consolation prize for missing out on the reefers, I got a new Pan Am boxcar.  It's so new that the salesman had to search for it a bit.  A Pan Am car has been on my wish list, and it does not disappointment when hauled behind my NS SD70ACe.  I'm debating getting some graffiti decals to mimic the prototype.

And lastly, to celebrate a successful but challenging elder care effort, I found an inexpensive Bachman N scale Santa Fe set online at Wal-Mart, and decided to give it a try -- just a little something for the dining room table.  I won't be converting anytime soon, it was just for fun.  When it arrives, I'll mosey on over to the HONGZ page if I have something to share.

Happy Sunday!

If the Tank cars are as light as my Lionel Tank Train cars, you may want to try them near the end of your consist with heavier cars in front of them.  Nice finds, I have to take a ride down to Charlie's soon.

Thanks for the tip, Matt.  I had been running them behind an empty gondola and then the engine to be prototypical.  On certain backup manoevers, that guaranteed a "disaster" especially on a long spur following a switch.  I thought the length of the gondola was the problem making for some unsafe geometry but it certainly could be lack of weight as well. I will give your suggestion a try once I lay down my MTH switching track again. (Running a Lionel oval at present.)

Sure I have, I purchased a new in the box MTH premier crane set and just received it last Wed from one of the forum member. The MTH Premier crane set is the nicest crane I ever had for the best price.  I had postwar lionel cranes ( my first crane #6560 all plastic junk came with a postwar lionel set #11600 in1968), N and HO scale cranes , Railking crane but this Premier crane tops them all !!! ( I forgot to add this, what makes crane set special is that my first Lionel crane had a red cab and black frame and black trucks but is long gone and this MTH Premier crane set has red cab and black body/trucks) sorry guys, SMILE

I hope to aquire  his someday. I will do a small pre and postwar layout someday to operate my families prew and post trains. If I aquire my friends fathers collection some day I will add an 031 loop for my dads/gps 1950 773. Also I got my future step kids started on Lionel. I'm building them a nice 4x8 layout when I get back down to Florida next month. They have chief Thomas/chessie, Williams RS3 and GP30 and a Lionel 0-8-0 and rs3 down there.

Franktrain, I had one come through for repair where the battery looked way worse than that and I brought her back to life with a few parts and a little elbow grease

I got the Lionel 2321 FM Trainmaster all cleaned and lubed and should easily last another 60 years not storing the battery inside of course.

I have a Lionel 224E with some freight  cars being held at my favorite antique store until I get home.  Haven't seen them but the price seemed right and he appreciated him thinking of me. If I don't want to keep it I will post it here for sale.  My son and I are talking about going to Spencer although he has a hard time getting around yet.  Being a caregiver for  your grown son is not for the faint of heart but he has been a good boy.

I had a purchase and an arrival recently. First is a Atlas 53' Boxcar in Illinois Central. I used to see these in the southeast suburbs of Chicago all the time! I was glad to finally add one to my collection. Thanks to the Muffins! Second is the 2016 RailKing club car. My son and I were looking forward to its arrival since it is our first stack car. However, we were both very surprised to see the flashing ETD on the car. My son ran it around his room with the lights off for quite a while!

Mark, make me an offer, Ive got a brand new GE Demo AC6000 thats been displayed,  make me a reasonable offer. Got a few GE Demos with flashing lights too that Id let go too

Allow me to ponder that.  I just sold 3 engines, but am waiting to complete the transactions. Though I normally don't buy contemporary engines, I have two friends who work at GE, one in Erie, and the other at Grove City, Pa, where they make the prime movers.  Therefore I do have a soft spot for the demos, Evos.

So, if you recall this exchange between Matt and me, you need to see "the rest of the story."

I contacted Matt, and we worked out a deal on one of his fleet.  And yes, I paid the postage.  :-)

So it arrived yesterday, the CEO is very impressed, and thinks kids will love it.

Matt is a really great guy to deal with, he lubed and test ran the engine, and packed it carefully for shipping!

My one friend helped engineer the communications on the full size beast, and my other friend is a machinist on the prime movers.  That is why this is the only contemporary engine I wanted, besides a Buffalo & Pittsburgh GP35-2 which I see at the bottom of my hill

I did. Just bought and will receive tomorrow a Lionel 28217 GP30 on Rio Grande colors to cut up and fix the pilots on. So now so far my fleet consists of;

Atlas SD35, SD40, GP35, GP15, Lionel GP30, And a Williams brass challenger.

Not bad for only 6 months collecting. I'll post pics when I get it tomorrow night. Can't wait. Always loved GP30's

 Not bad?

You should think about buying a whole collection at that rate .

Unless you want select items only, or just the newest items available, it might give you a cheap, running ,"base stock" to buy/sell/trade and learn from .

@adriatic...that's just my o scale collection....been modeling in many other scales for years....anyways my latest purchase pics as promised. These Lionel engines are smooth runners. Love it so far...almost a shame I have to cut it up to make it more accurate....

She runs good enough I do believe I found my switcher for my shelf layout. It's my first modern Lionel piece and so far I love it.

Tried to....never came in...think it went like somebody's catalog money on here, too....(several years ago I also tried to get a catalog offered for an O scale Mack railbus kit...at a town on the Canadian border with northern Washington state know as a maildrop....that never came in)  This time I paid the value for that 1939? Checker cab in 1/43rd....it has never come in.  Diecast Direct also listed ihis Checker but they had not gotten it at the time of a call, either.  I need to check again with them.

A couple of days ago I won a new repro 116 double station for a VERY good price on the evilBay, today I snagged a as-new T-Reproductions in the box 129B terrace also for a VERY good price from the same seller. The seller is in driving distance (about 1/2 hour), so I can pick them up and avoided having shipping them to me. I am thrilled...

I was at an airshow this past weekend with my WW2 Jeep supporting my living history group's display. There's usually a vendor selling models and such and he was there this year.

He had a Hobby Master Navy Stearman in 1.48 scale and only wanted $40 for it, new in the box (couldn't get that good deal anywhere on eBay, even without postage). Better still, it was in markings for 1943, the year my layout takes place:

Now, there's NO place to set it as if it's going to fly out. I've long toyed around with the idea of having a trainer plane belly-landed on the layout and I have a couple of spots I could do that at. I'd have yank the landing gear off and bend the props back (and probably hit the engine with a lot of excess 'oil') as those things would happen on a fixed-gear plane like that.

Or, as I despise whimsy on a layout, I might do nothing with it. At least I have a model that would look right for the layout and I can ponder what (if anything) to do with it as long as I want to.

So, anyway, it was a nice thing to find while I made the world safe for shave ice people:

Lee,

Why not just sting it and have it flying over your layout. NC had a couple of training bases

In 1936 the Charlotte Municipal Airport opened, operated by the City of Charlotte; Eastern Air Lines began scheduled passenger service in 1937. The original passenger terminal still exists at Fenway Sports Group's Boeing 727 parking area. (FSG's North American motorsport venture, Roush Fenway Racing, is based in the old terminal).

The United States Army Air Forces took control of the airport and established Morris Field Air Base in 1941. The airfield was used by the Third Air Force for antisubmarine patrols and training.

Ever since I was a kid, moving objects locked in static poses on layouts drove me nuts. It always irritated me to see baseball games or parades, where the figures were locked into statue mode, when the trains were all moving.

So the idea of hanging this biplane over the layout like the oddest (and quietest) helicopter ever made would be completely unacceptable to me. If it goes to the layout, it's got to be on the ground somehow.

Well planes do run out of fuel and have to land.

A few vintage Barclay folks arrived today to join the others on the layout. Carefully stored and in very little-played-with condition, they look almost brand new. They are looking forward to the upcoming winter sports season! My favorites are the baby in pink with her brother on the sled, and the skater with the green skating suit. And the two skiers' metal skis and poles are fantastic.

Allan, Dave's Mercer Junction appears to be a Great place.  But, is there not any toy train places left in Youngstown?  Back in my day there was Amers, Triggs, Boardman Hobbies, and then TAS.  I know they are all gone, but nothings new to place them.

Or is it like Charlotte?  When I moved here in 78 there a few very good places.  Now for the last 5/7-years absolutely NOTHING.  Closest in in Spencer.
