Caboose at rear of troop train?

If there was no coach/coaches for the railroad crew, i.e. Conductor, Brakeman, Flagman, to ride in, then there probably would have been a caboose on the rear end.

I am used to observation cars at the end of passenger trains. 

Very few passenger trains carried a observation car on the rear. Generally only the "name" or those trains with first class, i.e sleepers & diners, would have an observation car. The hundreds of other "regular" passenger trains generally did NOT have an observation car.

Absolutely! Virtually ever passenger car, no matter whether it was a coach, diner, sleeper, RPO, baggage car, etc., had marker holding brackets at all 4 corners in order to carry the kerosene marker lamps. More modern cars even had electrical receptacles for plugging in the newer electric marker lamps.
