I just installed a ser-2 all was well until a dz-2500 was cycled to diverging route and decided not to power off at cycles end so disabled them all and selected one dz 2500 to work with.

I changed the power wires red to common and black to hot wholly bejeebers the switch motor and the ser-2 started chattering  loudly.

so luckily am close to layout power switch am happy to report both items are okay.

but my question to those that understand the ser-2, in reversing the hot/common wires what did it change in regards to the ser-2 wiring serial data connection or db-9 connector?

i'm not ashamed to say electronic wiring is not my area of expertise as long as a hot/common wire hookup all is good after that not so much.

am hoping maybe one of lionel folk will chime in.

gunrunnerjohn,  on another thread something did cook my z-stuff data wire driver is doa!

originally I thought my issue was with a original legacy 3 connector cable I had modified so I could have my dcs tiu's connected as well.

so i had another unaltered cable hooked it up tried reversing wires again powered layout up and same thing happened this time I was right at layout kill switch so nothing else went poof.

thanks for the reply

Serial data has an idle state. It can be high or low depending, but whichever, the receiver looks for it. If the data is inverted, then the receiver will not respond correctly.

Also in this case, the TMCC common carries one side of the 455 KHz control signal. Anybody's guess on what the receiver does with that.

I'm curious what is a ser 2? Is that the same as a data wire driver.?  I've hooked a  few 2500 s with the data wire driver on a friends layout, We ran 3 wire buss around the layout and hooked up the DZ2500 to the buss.  They seemed to work  reasonably well.

Gregg, the ser-2 is to enable the legacy command base to control additional lionel accessories needing a dat/com connection as it was out of box my legacy base couldn't handle both the data driver and 6 BPC'S I had on my layout now once I get z-stuff issue resolved all should be fine me thinks!!

cjack the common you mention maybe that is where the wire reversal comes into play causing the chatter and subsequent electronic failure of data wire driver?

thanks for replies

For some additional context, see StPaul's other thread at:

The problems you are having started with connecting the white "push button" control wire together with the blue "data" wire. These wires must be isolated from each other, and by connecting them together you are creating a common connection point between track power and the data wire. The "chatter" is caused by having AC power applied to the internal circuitry of the DZ2500, the data wire driver, and ultimately the SER2. The failure of the data wire driver probably saved the SER2 from a similar fate.

I suggest you start by getting the push button properly controlling the DZ2500 exactly per the instructions, without any data connection to the DZ2500, before more damage results.

This is the SER2:

For people using a Lionel "Layout Control System" (LCS) connected to the Legacy base, the Legacy base can no longer be directly connected to older serial-interface TMCC peripherals. The SER2 is a LCS device that provides this capability.
