For the record,  should someone find this forum discussion in search of a solution to the problem described above:

Programming the ITU:

  1. Carefully following instructions and warnings offered by MTH, Barry Broskowitz's Book (DCS O Gauge Companion Book - 2nd Edition), and Rayman4449's website (http://www.gscaletrainforum.co...430-current-version/).
  2. When installing USB drivers downloaded from the MTH website, I received the following message "The requested operation requires elevation".  This means that the system does not believe I have administrative rights to install the drivers.  To perform the installation, I went to the download folder, found the USB driver download file, highlighted the file, right clicked the mouse, and selected RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.  I then went to the Device Manager to confirm that the drivers were installed.
  3. Sometimes, the MTH Loader software could not find my TIU. After power recycling the TIU, the Loader software quickly found the TIU.  Note, when I tried to power recycle the rev L TIU by removing the auxiliary power only to find out that the USB cable provides power.  I removed the auxiliary power cord and used the USB cable to power cycle the TIU which worked fine.
  4. When using a Serial USB-to-RS232 cable, make sure that you download the drivers for the cable.  Also, as I was power cycling the auxiliary power cable on the TIU, the serial cable would slightly separate from the RS232 interface which would prevent the upload from occurring.  Double checking to make sure the cable is connected to this interface should be checked periodically or when a problem occurs.

Programming the Remote Handset:

  5.  Make sure that the handset cable is plugged into the REMOTE INPUT port and not

       the AIU INPUT port

Now, I can enjoy running trains.
