1961 sees a GG1 exiting the North River Tunnel, North Tube. The portal house above the portal and the third rail give it away, along with the high concrete walls.

Brian;

Thanks for posting that great picture and the link to the info. I immediately recognized the location, but never knew that it was called the North River Tunnel.

As I said, I immediately recognized the location even though I only road through there once. On 9/11, I was part of a car pool that commuted from the Poconos to NYC. We used to come out of the Lincoln Tunnel and go right in to the parking lot at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Needless to say, after the attacks, Manhattan was locked down tighter than a drum, so we couldn’t get the car out of the parking lot (actually, it was several days before the lot was reopened). On the 12th, we started calling around to find a way out of the city. Fortunately, NJ Transit was running trains, though not on a set schedule. We were able to get a train out to Dover NJ. They didn’t charge for rides that day. It was almost surreal - the train was packed, but no one talked. We came out of that tunnel portal in Jersey, and traveled across the Meadowlands where you could see lower Manhattan... in the place of the two towers was a column of smoke. I still remember every moment of that ride

Where was the grade crossing photo taken, Brian ?

  PA Route 441 crossing      Royalton, Pennsylvania, USA    September, 1977

Here's three Gs westbound with an intermodal train, nearing CP ROY and the old PRR Main Line. The train is using the single-tracked Royalton Branch, which connects to the old PRR Atglen & Susquehanna Branch about 12 miles east, at CP SHOCKS.

Brian:

Thanks for the clarification. When posting great photos like this one, location is important.
