I was messing around with my drop down gate today and decided to put some basic scenery on it. It has to be low as to not get knocked off when the gate it down. Before I ballast the track I wanted to try some "fake" tie plates. I used a roof brown paint pen and spikes. I have already decided to go back and weather the ties with some gray and re-do the tie plates for contrast. After all, I am modeling a cash-strapped shortline!

So you are pulling our leg when you say you are converting all your 2-rail stuff to center third rail? Don't need tie plates on tinplate track.
Did you guys see the W&LE video? Anybody who is that good at scenery and who uses 3-rail track has to be in love with the looks of a center rail.
Well, if handlaying center rail track, you would need tie plates, except in the case
above, it looks like tie plates had been there, but weren't replaced when track was
realigned. Which might be a shortcut of a cash-strapped short line, that is, spike the
rail to the ties, and get trains back on the road.
Nope, no joking. Still thinking about 3R, even adding 3R loop to my present layout. But as I was playing around with possibilities I started messing with this section of track.
