Hockey Rink

So the small rink has photo paper boards which is ok for now, but I came across this wonderful stuff called Kydex which I used for the boards on the big rink.  Its really perfect for this,  just heat it up and its easily moldable.  Using Banjoflyer's idea (thank you) I made the boards pretty quickly.  Now I just need to trim them up and attach them to the "ice".  But first I need to paint the lines and glue down the circles I cut out for the face off zones.  Last will be the glass.  Progress!

It has been a very productive weekend!  The rink is pretty much finished for now.  I finally found some hockey figures from Impact miniatures, but they are shipping from the UK so it'll be a few weeks.  I plan on adding glass and the bench/penalty box areas eventually.  To finish it off Id like to build a pole building type roof over it with lighting and a parking lot.  We'll see.

Great job Nick!   Perhaps you could have a story about Claus the Zamboni driver who isn't very happy because his long johns vas too tin and somebody stole the cushion for his seat. Now he better hurry before he sticks to his yob more dan he vants to don't cha know.      OSD

Well, I received my hockey figures from Impact! Miniatures and I am very happy with them!  These are exactly what I was looking for.  Its funny that this company really only has fantasy figurines for gaming...  and hockey.

I've got the local team (Coeur d'Alene Thunder)  almost done, but Im not sure who they will be playing just yet.  The Habs?  Hawks?  Maybe a WHL team like the Spokane Chiefs?  Either way this has been such a fun project.

Once the players are done Im going to focus on the glass and finally the roof.

Trying out a method I came up with for the glass.  Its just 1/8 wood strips and plastic.  It seems to be working, but is VERY fragile.  I'm using testors glue to attach the wood to the plastic boards (not sure if thats the best idea).  I'm not loving the bare wood look for the posts, but when I tryed it with painted pieces of wood the glue just melted the paint and made a mess of the "glass".  I like it, but I have a feeling I'll be doing it over.

Any suggestions are appreciated.  And the tape is temporary until the glue dries.

If you are using Testors plastic cement, it will not work on wood. Testors cement welds styrene plastic together bu melting the plastic and then it re-hardens as one piece. A strong bond but only works on plastic. I suggest you get some Plastruct or Evergreen plastic rods and try them. Paint them after gluing. Testors makes a glue for windows that won't fog the windows like regular plastic cement will.

I'm pretty new at detail work, but I've always wanted an ice rink on my layout.  I decided to start with a small rink to try out an idea I had with using gloss paint and matte finish to simulate the zamboni resurfacing the ice.  The effect isn't as dramatic as I hoped, but this is the first attempt.  The straight lines were easy of course, but I'm stumped on how to get the circular stripes on the ice for my next attempt.  Ultimately I'd like to have a larger (not quite scale) covered outdoor rink, complete with boards and "glass",  lighted with players, but I also cannot find any O scale hockey figures.  Closest I could get was painting a Habs jersey on my zamboni driver.  Any comments or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,  Nick
