Many people in the work world ask me if I prefer Steven or Steve. I love this because it's a perfect lead-in to my favorite gentle joke of all time:
Call me what you want, just don't call me late for dinner.

In my opinion, anyone that can't give his or her first mane on here has a problem.
It's not that we can't, it's that we choose not to. That choice is allowed by the forum rules. There is a difference.
I don't understand why folks have a problem when other folks don't use their first (or real) name here...
Rusty
HMMMMMM.........
I'll give you all one guess
<---
How many John's will there be? Would that help?
Calling one by their name is personal yes, but how personal can you expect to be with people you really don't even know.... other than some typed words in a forum or watching their YouTube videos.
Every site I belong to I use the same screen name. After awhile everyone gets to your what your real name is any way. I log into my electric and water bill accounts under Laidoffsick. If someone wants to hack my accounts, go ahead, pay my bill while you're in there
Even walking around at York...people say hey, you're Laidoffsick. Yes I am, and like I said ... I've been called much worse. People recognize my screen name more than my real name, and that's fine. At least I didn't use Dumb A** like my intials... D.A.
I have always signed my first name. My last name is Huenemoerder. which do you prefer?
Real or pretend names - all same-same to me.
Use what you like.
It doesn't get much easier than my screen name but I was thinking of changing it to something more cordial like Al Capone. To be honest I am not afraid of using my real name and it simplifies things. Last count we have at least 4 or 5 other Dennis' on this forum so if we had Dennis A , Dennis B, Dennis C and Dennis L things might get confusing.
My first name is James. I have no issue with people referring to me by that name on the forums. For some reason it never crossed my mind to use my real name as my forum ID.
Just don't call me Jim. When I was growing up my Mom always got mad a people calling me Jim. She always said your name is James, that's the name we gave you. Only person who ever really called me Jim and didn't get in trouble was my high school football coach. That was only after I begged my Mom not to say something to him.

You mean your name isn't Rusty?
That's a fine name, in "Make Room for Daddy", the son was named Rusty
William1, ask the Webmaster if William. is available. Then you will be "William period."

Rusty was also the name of the kid on TV's Rin Tin Tin. Also, CW is my 27th favorite network.
Popeye said "I am what I am"
My real name is Bill though I'm not really a farmer - neighbor's kid dubbed me that since I was always fooling around in the garden.
I chose the screen name since it tells everyone about my train interests. I always include my first name in my posts.

I know Ed. You have been looking for his name for a long time! I don't think he's going to give it up.
Some folks might even call it stalking.
Give it a rest and respect my privacy.
Sounds Good

I use my first name and my middle initial as my member display name. Its just more personal. I also use it and my location in my signature.
I chose my screen name here to reflect the part of the hobby that brought me back to trains in the late 90's. I sign my posts with my first name.
Jon (actually Jonathan but that's too long to type )
Looking at my screen name should tell you not only my first name but my favorite railroad as well.
I guess everyone knows my name, and where I live for that matter. However, Ihave no problem with members keeping their name private if that is what they wish.
Chris,
I definitely agree 1st names would be nice, in fact I use mine all the time on the OGR, along with my real photograph. I never have believed hiding behind a key board was any good for a mans character or for any organization he participates in.
PCRR/Dave
Its very personal, you'll never catch me revealing my first and or last names, or even what city and state I live in.
............................oops
I'll leave you with this:
Who is John Galt?
A rhetorical question?
Are you referring to the character in Ayn Rand's book Atlas Shrugged.?
More a just me having some fun and seeing if anyone would notice. First line of the book, and I tend to like anyone that can answer the question.
I think using real names gives the communications here a bit more authenticity than they might ordinarily have. Maybe if folks used their real names it might give pause before hitting the send button on mean spirited replies to someones post.
And besides I don't think I could have come up with a more creative last name than the one I was born with.....
Great topic,
John
….Many forum names are car related: Frankly, an actually name like "Michael" tells me nothing about a person, but CarguyZM10 gives me an idea about one's interest, etc., and what Michael R likes to lead off with in representing himself to others. And AMCDave - I think I know a bit about his hobbies and interests, too. And when the forum name makes no sense, (Aliwombat?1*#??) well, people are allowed, and as long as I can spell it . . . "
Oh boy! If I was to do that, I'd have to change my forum name to "Heart Break Kid"
(Ladies shrieking: Ooh Ooh Brian!)
I think I'm cute
I know I'm sexy
I've got the looks

No, people who denigrate other people over trivia have a problem.
Some things are better left unsaid! It's a personal choice and only a suggestion. There is no right or wrong answer.
I was waiting for the first Dennis to weigh in on the subject. So now I'm in.

I also never had red hair...
My screen name was developed somewhat in homage of the long time Model Railroader columnist, Ray L. Rhodes, who was in reality MR author Bill Rau, who imparted his wit and wisdom to Model Railroader readers in the 60's and early 70's.
What's in a name? I seem to recall some guy named Marion Robert Morrison went by a different name...
Rusty
I agree 100%.
Watson ...keep the rails polished...
Long story, and I'll try not to bore anyone. I used my regular name until about 2008. At that time there were a bunch of trolls on the Forum who were eliminated(thank you, Rich). They got set up on an alternate Forum and started bad-mouthing people who were here (this activity died in a few months).
Enter my wife, who frequently Googles our names (we're both physicians) since new/prospective patients do that all that time.....she found some of the trolling and asked me to be less visible.
Since I'm a fan of the Putnam Division, it was a logical choice. I always sign my posts with my first name. If you look at my profile or the video clip at the bottom of my profile, I'm hardly invisible.
