Hi, i just received a brand new Legacy engine, special run of a L&N USRA steam engine from Mr. Muffins.

I have tried unsucessfully to get the engine added to the 991 remote using the legacy command base. Watched several Youtube videos and other online documents all of which appear several years old..... anyway, i received the engine and powered up the track and the engine came on( i thought i had to push the eng ON button first).  i got the engine to move and and smoke a little a couple of times, but the horn would not work, so after several attempts at getting it to run using the remote, i followed the 14 step process i found online to reset the engine, BUT it did not work, so now i have a $1300+ engine that i cant seem to get into the CAB remote.... any help would be appreciated.

The engine should be silent when track power is applied.  It should not "wake up" until its addressed by the remote.  That is problem one.  It sounds like the engine is not detecting the command signal.  Make sure the legacy base is on first before powering up the track.  This ensures the legacy signal is there when the engine receives power.

As for the programming the remote with the engine, you can enter the engine into the remote without the engine on.  Power up the legacy base, turn on the cab1.  Then you can manually enter the engine into the remote.

To assign an id to the engine, you set the program/run switch to program.  Power the track, press eng button, enter the engine number, press set.  The engine should whistle/horn to acknowledge.  Power off the track and set the switch back to run.  This procedure will only work if the engine properly detects the legacy signal.

Hi, thanks for info.... I checked the wire connection btwn the base and the track, and then powered on the base, i next plugged in the track power and the engine came on.  I entered the engine number and hit SET and the engine is supposed to blow horn, but it does not .  As i said yesterday i tried the multi step process to factory reset the engine, but that didn't seem to work.  ???

Instead of trying to enter information into the remote. The engine comes with a default setting of engine one. Your setup sounds fine. You do have close to 18v at the track ? I’m assuming your using a Fixed channel. Make sure the program switch is in the run position. With everything powered up. Your engine should be silent. Just select Engine 1 and then hit the Aux 1 button. You can enter information into the remote later if all goes well.  It should come to life. Your attempts at reprogramming and such seemed to have not gone right so I’m guessing the ID never changed.

Dave, I have 19 volts to the track as measured by a multimeter. Yes i am on fixed channel 1 on the TIU with the legacy base wire connected to the wire coming out of Fixed DCS out 1. As soon as i added power to the track the engine took off a full speed, which is different then it just starting up as before. I will recheck all wiring and now i want to clear the remote of all other engines and data but i am unclear exactly how to do that.... ?

You don't need to clear engine data from Legacy Remote.  That would not cause your issues.

Sounds like you have no Legacy Signal to the track.

Is it attached to the correct rail for Legacy?

All, just to let you know the Legacy Engine has been added successfully to the remote.  I did have a surge protector with battery back up attached inline with the legacy base and removed that, and i also found another way to reset the engine.  So now everything appears to work fine. Thanks to all for your input, as since i am in Japan, there is NOT a train shop here that i can take my issues too..  Thanks.
