I've almost blown through my York "budget" and I haven't even pulled out of the driveway yet!!

Were these prices less than what you would expect during the rest of the year?

 

If not, you have been suckered into York fever and you are paying more on emotional/gut terms.

 

If so, then revel in your good fortune with cut-rate prices realized!!!

I've been very careful to limit what I buy on the forum in the weeks leading up to York. Don't want to burn thru my budget either but it's really hard not to sometimes.

So I'm wondering... Why is it always about bargain basement prices?  Is that ALL that motivates some people?  

 

Quite frankly,  I price my stuff pretty fairly here when all is said and done.  And if you don't like the prices, or you don't want to make a reasonable offer, then just move on.  It's a very simple concept.

 

Contrary to your innuendo, many long-time forum folks who post for-sale listings here aren't looking for "suckers".  For the most part, buyers here are pretty savvy anyway.  And they can see a humdinger price-tag a mile down the road.

 

I parted with a good number of items here a few years ago.  So by now, when I put a listing together, we're not talking about fat or even muscle.  We're getting down to some serious bone with many of the items in my most recent listing.  I try to keep things win-win.  And I take pride knowing several folks have made multiple, satisfactory purchases over the years.

 

I guess I'd never make it as a dealer though, 'cause I'd be too tempted to tell folks to go pound sand when they're only looking to make a win-lose deal.  If you need me to fund your train purchases by giving stuff away, then you underestimate the fact that some of us are more than happy to keep an item in our collection when we feel the deal going into win-lose territory just to make you smile.  Sorry to burst your bubble.

Mike, it's not only here.  I can't tell you how many times I've passed on something this year from all the dealer discount sales 'cause ya just can't buy everything out there -- no matter how good the prices may be.   We all have our limits!  

 

In the final days of SideTrack Hobbies' store relocation sale, some of the discount levels of the tinplate accessories were INSANE.  But I just had to stop at a certain point... as painful as it was to know what a great deal I left on the table.  Oh to be at a point where money is no object.  

 

Back to reality now.

Ditto. Two eBay items have me strapped.... I have two other sales I've committed to on the OGR For Sale Forum (York P/U), after that I'm down to chump change.

Gilly, you and I can have a high time hanging out at the funnel cake truck all day.  Surely, we can scrape up enough spare change for that!  

 

Thank you for the generous offer, Marty.  But one of the guys I'm buying from will be conveniently ensconced on the Fairgrounds in a camper.  So I negotiated as part of the sale that I have unlimited bathroom access for the 48 hour period!  

What is this word budget that you speak of?

Mike, I wish that I could say that is the case, but what I am looking for has not shown up on the Sell Board. So the budget is in tact as we prepare to leave for York.

You are correct in that I am already picking up 6 items from people already off of the forum and spent more than I had planned too.  Fortunately I have had some very good finds and glad to have them.  I am just looking forward to go picking them all up.  If I find absolutely nothing else, I will be happy still.  I just like walking around as well and if it is on my want list and the price is right then I will entertain.  I have parted with several items over the last 3 months so really not interested in buying stuff that one day I might resale.  I am trying to stick strictly with my core items but the items I am picking up fit into that mix.

 

I should see you and David in person Thursday as both of you are buying/trading with a friend of mine that I am attending with.

I feel your pain, Mike. Just took another eBay hit last night.

If I were smart I would  not even look at the Buy/Sell Forum at all the week before York!  But...I...just...can't...help...myself!!!  

For us non Yorkers I like it, I have seen some nice low prices on The Bay and on here that is to good to be true,  but with a new layout looming I am saving my pennies and quarters for track.   Speaking of quarters do you get charged to use the restrooms in York, that's crazy.  Nick

I find York a whole lot more enjoyable when I have no extra money to spend and I am not looking for anything special. I now can really spend my time just aimlessly roaming the halls taking it all in. Long conversations with dealers and forum members is what I really enjoy the most about York. I also hate reading rows and rows of freight car end flaps to find out what the contents are.

 

Answering Nature's call is free, Nick.  But the restrooms have bathroom attendants restocking the paper towels, emptying the rubbish etc., and they all have tip bowls so most people drop some change or a dollar into the bowl as they exit.  

 

It's kind of like the toll situation here between New Jersey and NYC (at least at the GW Bridge).  Anyone can enter NJ for free...but you have to "pay" to get out!!

Boy, this sure is the truth. Won't happen this time. We are on the hunt for 2 K-Line passenger car sets, so no relaxing till we find them. 

I assume, Mike, that in these economic times those forum members who are selling want to have extra $$$ in their pockets too, whether to spend at York, their LHS, internet retailers and auction sites or here on the buy/sell board.

I hear you Mike!  I've already blown my York budget on a recent eBay purchase  (standard gauge 392e with matching passenger cars in Lehigh Valley livery).

But, since I've already purchased my ticket and taken the day off,  might as well go!   I'll just have to raise my "budget" in case I come across that elusive item!

Frank, that's the beauty about a train budget, since you make it up in the first place, you can alter it. 

The curse of the overspenders has spread throughout the land....

The Lionel 2014 Signature, Volume 1 Catalog has me really Strapped. Its Getting Ready to Happen, The Build to Order, will Probably All come in NOVEMBER/DECEMBER...YES, I agree, buying and selling on the OGR Forum has been Brisk, and therefore made it possible to pay cash for my order, just not enough travel money....I Love to go to YORK and just Look and Remember my Childhood, those beautiful trains under the Christmas Tree in the Forties and the Fifties, and the Sixties, and the Seveny's, and the Eighties, and the Nineties, And TODAY. Wow, you remember that photo, John?  I'm impressed.  As much as I would like some more York money, I'm going to hold onto the tank car (it says Pawtucket on it!!).  Coincidentally, I got that last York in the Orange Hall (not where I started out either, so it had been sitting there for a while).  

 

However, if and when I draw up my "train will," this car will have your name on it.
