Everything but the spindles is poplar from HD cut on the table saw.  Holes for spindles done on drill press to keep then aligned and evenly spaced.

The irony is now I am thinking of replacing them with the metal union jack pattern JohnnieWalker and I have been batting around. If you look at the 106 bridges in the background, you can see that look. I also may paint some of it green. Right now they are all cream and I feel like it's drawing too much focus. IMG_0996

Will , your spindle fencing looks great , I think you are going to have to make up a union jack prototype and set it in place on your layout .  I can see why you may want to do it , being that the bridges in the back have that  classic design.  Of course today at my shop my curiosity got to me and I went rummaging around and found a piece of the Union Jack from some long long ago project.  If you lived near by I would say swing by and get it . I think I have a mental picture of what you are thinking and I just might (I will ) attempt to make a section of fence out of it . I hope you find it , not sure if Lowe’s has it as well , I would guess that they do. 3ECD6DA2-47FE-4362-82A3-6B66ED98242C

Yeah, I was afraid of this. The Party Gondola tipped on the curve and went over the cliff. Gonna need a slow down sign, barrier on curves and, well, safety fence. It’s really high compared to the carpet layouts..... Fortescue supervising rescue efforts. Thankfully no Ewes wer lost. Gi-raffe is filing OSHA report to the main office.....

I nominate Miggy for a Poobah Award for actually USING a 6460 for its intended purpose.

Maybe you could combine the two materials...

That would give you something similar to the railings around this station...

That is exactly what I was thinking, but only one course high. One course is 1 1/4" according to @JohnnieWalker.  The mesh would basically replace the spindles which are 1 1/8". Since I have other places to put this, I may try that first.

Fence prototype

Of course, I could get fancy and electrify it with a spindle turned upside down, socket and pear shaped bulb.

I was actually kicking around the exact same idea about the lights ! I'm working on a jig idea to cut slots for the aluminum using a razor saw and if I get really ambitious a way to cut a recess into the columns using a Dremel.

Hi everyone,

This is my "temporary" 4 x 8 layout which is still up from Thanksgiving.  It consists of two 4 x 4 birch ply 1/2" boards covered in 24" x 24" foam tiles.  It is dead quiet with that covering.  Two levels.  Upper level is an automatic trolley layout.  Powered by a KW transformer.

I love the foam tile idea. They come in a Hunter green which would give my table a real "toy train" feel! Love It!

Here’s something to maybe think about.  While freezing in my shop this morning I came up with an idea as to how to cap the union Jack metal “fencing”  . No mind you this is just an idea/sample of what I came up with . I had a straight section of standard gauge rail sitting on my shop layout so I took it and pried open the bottom of the rail with a screwdriver.  Just enough to slide the fence into it .  It is a snug fit .  Also with this system one can still use track pins and join sections together including curves .  The only down fall I see at this time is the visible crimp marks from where the old ties were .  I may have to pursue this system further and incorporate posts .  I gave thought to spray painting the fence green and the top rail gold or brass .  1CBA4BC2-4275-45E8-B4EA-EA03D3D75AE0F9F58DA1-9681-4093-A853-5041EC4841054B59157A-C6C3-4F59-A2DD-B50F022A0CB3D2EB278D-774D-432E-B13C-4FA08303985A80168DC8-2CAB-418C-9B65-2A64775680C3DE462CC0-FEF3-43CB-96E6-29B65C65E35Fimage

My only issue with the union jack available is the 1x1 sizing of the pattern. I've been on the hunt for a more "elegant" style with a thinner cross and X design and with a more 1x2 sizing, if that makes any sense.

Jerry

Yes, larger pattern? I understand, but for my low rail, that might be perfect. I don't want to hide the trains, just keep them on the table.

@JohnnieWalker How thick is that? i am thinking about .02 inch, pretty thin. Is it floppy? The rail is an ingenious idea.

I'm thinking more like the second one here a 1"x2" rectangle instead of the 1x1 that seems to be commonly available...

All of the union jacks I've seen are more like the first one.

Hi  Will and everyone else. Happy Easter. The thickness is .5 or 1/2 mm which is 24 gage sheet metal.  It is a little floppy but not bad when pressed into the rail .   Next time I have spare time at my shop I will look for a curved section of track to make the curved fence and possibly add a few posts .  I figure I can make a slot in the posts by using a coping saw .  When I do it I will post a photo or 2 or 3 .

You might look at Gargraves track, at least for the straights. You wouldn't have those crimps to worry about, and the profile might look better.

Just an update on Club business:

Tweaked the certificate, I think I've gotten a handle on the out of focus and slightly off center issues. Would like to get a gold stamped seal for the bottom left corner with a big 48 in the center and our Latin motto around it, that would add another $1.50 to the cost

Speaking of which how does "Terra de Quatuor X Octo Lignum Crusta" sound? Roughly translated The Land Of The 4x8 Plywood or just stick with NOS AEDIFICARE PARVA, SED SOMNIUM MAGNUM (we build small but dream big)?

Was on the VistaPrint site last night working on the membership card but the site was acting a bit wonky. Not sure if it was something I was doing but everytime I went to the preview it showed a white card not black and quoted me a price based on a paper card and not plastic. I've sent them an email but haven't heard back yet. Still have to set up a an email address for The 48 Club and set up a PayPal account, cost of the cards is around $83 for 50 or $54 for 25 (I'll have a better handle on that cost once I hear back from Vistaprint), the certificates are $8 for 50 sheets of parchment (hopefully the ink cartridge will hold out), certificate mailing envelopes run about 90 cents so that's another $45. Postage is unknown right now but so far it's looking like $2.83 to maybe $3.40 postage not included to just make a membership package (the $3.40 is if I only get 25 cards made at a time, not sure how many would actually want one so it might be less of an initial hit on me to go that route, especially if not everyone wants a kit).

So right now that's where that stands. As much as I'd like to be able to just make them up and send them out but that could get a little expensive on my part and the CEO probably would take issue with it.

So here is a sample section of fencing made from the Union Jack decorative metal panel.  I took a wooden dowel and put two vertical cuts into it on each side with a hacksaw . I used that because it was in arms reach when I had the dowels in the vise . The cuts are about a quarter inch deep . The photos don’t  show the gold color very well that I used for the top rail , probably needs a few more coats . I also spray painted the fencing a green color that I had sitting around .  The posts are still in white primer .   Next up is adding a curved section to it . 5216AEB3-FB11-4243-8D52-7F907C11676C33BBFEB5-7B7D-45C0-A65A-F78FB77F123CF4733765-E7B4-4A9D-A9FE-93D204C3138888AC4DC9-2FD4-486D-8EDE-B4A5AEC2B523297D1D5D-C7FA-4DC1-9B59-C16455A6636C

Cool. Is that the Gargraves rail? I think it I would butt the rail into the post, and maybe have the pattern go further toward the bottom. Maybe a finial?fence

It's all up for grabs and tweeking .  I know the dowels are too long , they were in the scrap box so I grabbed them  , too small to hold in the chop saw to shorten them .  As for the finials or lights it's up to you . It would look pretty snazzy with lights that's for sure .  Obviously a lot more work too , but probably worth it .   The reveal on this sample is only 1 1/2 Union Jacks = 1 7/8 inches . If you were to use 2 Union Jacks tall the reveal would be 2 3/8 inches plus your tops and bottoms . The fence I used is a total of two inches , there's a 1/4 inch pinched up inside the rail .

“Terra de Quatuor X Octo Lignum Crusta“   There’s something about Lignum Crusta that just seems to fit...

would be happy to kick in some extra $$ to jump start the certificates, cards.   (Gotta keep the CEO’s happy 😁)  my paypal account has a train refund that needs to go before it gets “alternatively purposed”
ditto on the thanks for all the unbelievable great work you’ve done on this!

Apparently the Romans were not as technologically advanced as I thought, they didn't have plywood so I had to use "wood veneer" or "lignum crusta" instead.

I'm going to make myself nuts with all the possible Latin things we could use like:

Four By Eight Wood Veneer    Quattuor Per Octo Lignum Crusta  which sums us up in a nutshell, I need to pick one and move one!

I thank you for your offer to help out with the membership kit, I'll have to think on it.

Come o man, no guts no glory!

I just finished setting up an email address for the club:

The48Club@yahoo.com

So now if we have any real business to discuss or any secret communications we can now!
