I have the above locomotive and it has a small issue. The flickering firebox doesn't flicker. I checked the bulb, and it's fine. I don't see any obvious wiring issues while looking around. I tried the reset from the manual, that didn't change anything.
What does that light actually connect to, I have no wiring diagrams, and I've never tracked this down before. It must have some circuit that imparts the flickering, just wondering where it gets it's power.

I'll have to take a look, it's a simple thing, I figured I'd just pop a bulb into it and be done with it. NOT! 
I have to say, this is the first one of those that has had anything but a bad bulb, it's a pretty simple function.
Do you happen to know what circuit drives the bulb?
John, I have the same engine. I just double checked to be sure, my light does not flicker.
The box discription say "glowing firebox light" I am not sure, does this mean the light is only supposed to glow without flickering?
I think that Bob is probably right, I'm guessing this is just a bulb. I may have to do one of my mods with the tea candle LED and make mine a flickering firebox.

How in the world can you even see the fire box glow when the engine is running around a layout?

I believe John is retired. That sounds like the life to me.
Of course, it was simple. 
At least it wasn't obvious. Although the screws that hold the little PCB were tight, the ground wasn't making it to the socket anyway. A slightly longer screw with a lock washer solved the issue.
FWIW, the light is just a light and is powered directly from track power, no flickering involved.
