I have a TMCC crane that needs a boom car so I ordered a Legacy boom.  I'm counting on the two units being operable with TMCC, but can anyone tell me if I'm wrong?  I realize, I may not be able to access all of the features the new boom might have which are only operable with Legacy.   I suppose the opposite question is also a fair one.  Can the TMCC crane be operated with the Legacy system?

I pre ordered the SP daylight legacy boom/crane set. I did ask, I was told it will be an exact copy of the TMCC but may have different/better sounds but electronically and physically the same as the older TMCC. I did not verify with Lionel since the answer came from one of their dealers. So in a sense, why they call it Legacy when it really is an updated sounds TMCC set?

However, Even if they are nothing more than a reissue of the old TMCC cranes, they are awesome.

OP asked about availability. If it's really not until Dec. 2015 that's a really major setback and not one I've seen mentioned elsewhere. Lionel shipping schedule still shows the date as Nov. 2014; Charles Ro's website had been showing expected availability as from 10 Feb. 2015 but now has been altered to "on backorder." I've asked around but got no definite word whether they are on the water (really meaning held up by the West Coast ports dispute) or seriously delayed at factory level. Doesn't bode well if it's the latter.

I thought so re shipping date. Not good but that's the breaks.

The CAB2 controls for the current TMCC issue of these cranes are better than the old CAB1 controls because there are icons on the keypad for every operating feature. That plus an improved sound set justifies the Legacy badge, or so I think.

I was looking for a set two years ago, and ended up with two sets, and plan to keep them both.

Set #1 is BN with 'steam' sounds - engine and whistle.

Set #2 is SF with 'diesel' sounds - engine and horn.

What is interesting is that I bought the BN crane first, looked for a crane car, and could not find a matching BN, so I found and bought a SF car. I painted it to match the BN crane, and it looks fine. It has the STEAM sounds.

While looking for the BN car, I found a new SF complete set, and the price was too hard to resist, so I bought it also. The car on this set, although it looked the same as the SF car I had bought a few days prior, has diesel sounds.

Both run great with the Cab-2, which has the proper icons for the crane operations.

Bagelman,

I have been waiting for the Legacy Crane Car sense they were 1st advertised,

I finally pre ordered one, because I do believe it's going to be a limited run.  I am also waiting on the 031 FasTrack Command Control switches, for my 3rd level on the Christmas layout.  Both of these 2 items have kind of been pushed back on the actual release dates.  We will just have to keep watching for them.

Chessie 71,

Thanks for the demo and the Chessie verion colors on your Crane & Tender are great stuff!

Alex,

If my wife sees the BN Green colors I will end up with 2 also.  Great looking no doubt about it.

I recently picked up a NYC version with sound car and was curious how Legacy would make it better. After checking what's inside the sound car it looks like the old RS4 boards take up much of the space in the cabin only leaving room for a small flat speaker plus battery. The new integrated Legacy sound board should leave plenty of room for a bigger fatboy speaker. I'm not likely to upgrade even if they come out with a NYC version but should be good for those waiting for a new one.

Looking at the Lionel catalog description for the SP, CSX, DT&I and Maintenance of Way Legacy versions, it says that the air horn is quillable and I think all these versions have diesel engine sounds.  I don't think that there is a steam whistle version like the TMCC PRR model, 6-29814.
