I've ordered my CAB-1L remote/base set and now I need to figure out how to adapt my current conventional power system to run it. Here's what I have:

1) The layout is 5x10 and comprised of two connected loops separated by blocks. One loop is powered by a CW-80 and the other by a 100w MTH brick/Z controller. Each transformer is connected to a terminal strip with feeders running to multiple points on each loop.

2) I have a DCS Remote Commander and receiver which I plan to use since I have one MTH PS-2 locomotive.

 

Questions:

1) Do I still need the terminal strips and feeder wires or will one wire from power source to track be sufficient for a layout this size? 

2) I'm assuming the 100w MTH brick would be preferable since it puts out more watts and I plan to run to trains at once. The brick is limited to 18v output so can I connect it directly to the track using DCS Remote Commander receiver?

If the 2 loops have connected outside rails which I recommend, and the block is only Center Rail, you can use both power supplies ensuring they are phased correctly.

 

One wire from the CAB-1L Base to the outside rail (can be done at you common outside rail terminal strip) and your done.  You can use the DCS Remote Receiver passively on one loop, preferably the one using the MTH Z-1000.  G

It sounds as if you want a command only setup. If yes, I would say that you would have sufficient power using the MTH brick, connected through the receiver to the track or terminal strip.(see manual page attached) Maintain the current wiring. Feed both power divisions with the brick.

Then connect the Cab-1L base wire to the common.

 

 I am not really an MTH person, but I only see one problem. Isn't it recommended to reduce the voltage for a PS2 loco for battery charging? A moot point if you have a BCR. Perhaps G can chime in on this.

I have a Lionel starter set transformer (40w, I think) that I used for all my accessories, operating tracks and switches. My MTH brick and CW-80 are strictly for track power at this point. 
 
Since I'll be running a constant 18v I'm guessing I should rewire the switches to track power?
 
I'll probably also switch all my operating tracks to track power except the one that powers my horse corral accessory which is very finicky with regards to voltage - too little the horses don't move, too much they tip over.

Lighted cars and older accessories could push you to the limit on the Z. If you have them, using the CW-80 for accessory power would be the solution. I would try the Z brick and see if it's enough.
