I have previously only used Variable 1 for the entire layout.

I have implemented many fixes that you all have suggested. And read through the "BooK"again, and again....... 

 

1.First I did mount the TIU on the wall. Powered with a separate power supply to the AUX power port.  

 

2. I split the layout into 3 zones, each with its own channel. 

Track signal strength is now almost all 10's, great!( have a low signal across one area of switches.)

 

3. I have the zones wired to Fixed 1, Fixed 2 and Variable 2.

 

Question, I run one zone on Variable 2. Run the throttle handle, (old ZW), up to 18 volts. Each time I shut down the system, will V2 need to be brought back on line when restarted? Or is there a way always be at max power all the time?

 

4. Concerning start up or shut down, do the transformer handles have to be brought back to zero. or can they be left at 18 volts? 

  

5. I put the magic light on two of the 3 channels and will put the other one on when I get one.

Question here, the magic bulb goes across the + and - of the terminal block, not inline?

 

6. Concerning wanting to run conventional. If the TUI is not powered up, the transformers handles can control the output through the Fixed 1 and Fixed 2 right? (It is a straight through connection?).

 

7. concerning the fuse, not sure where it goes. Originally I had it between the transformer and the TUI. I moved it to be inllne between each TUI channel and the terminal block. Do I need a fuse at both locations?(Now that I think about it, the fuses in the TUI should handle what I just did right?)

 

 

Again, I still have more reading to do in the Barry's  "BooK" to learn more on the Fixed operation, but all is great right now. Just a little tweaking to do.

 

Unrelated to above. 

I do not use "smoke", is there a way to turn off "smoke" more or less permanently on each unit? It seem that some of my diesels need "smoke" turned off each time they start up.

Yes, it will.

No, there is not, if using the variable channels.

The handles on a PW ZW may remain up.

They go across Hot and Common.

Yes, that's correct.

You have the fuse incorrectly placed. It should be in the Hot wire between the transformer and the TIU (Not TUI).

That's a bad idea. You really don't want to take the TIU apart every time you blow a fuse.

The conventional smoke switch or pot on the engine determines whether the smoke is on or off when the engine is started up under DCS.

   Do yourself a favor and use 10 Amp Scott breakers instead of fuses between your transformers and the TIU, works great and all you need to due to restart is push the breaker back down to reset it.  Works perfect with the old ZW & KW transformers, I have used them for years on my DCS layout, have never damaged one TIU.

Notice the Scott 10 Amp Breaker banks with their white strips, in front of the transformers, even the Z4K
