Lionel 1044 transformer whistle control resistor question | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I just came into a 1044 and when I removed the case I found centering spring and retaining sleeve laying on the bottom of the transformer. Looking closer I see that the wound resistor is broken. My question for you folks is what can I replace the resistor with as I doubt I will be able to find an exact replacement. I would need to know the type, wattage, and other specs to find a sufficient replacement. I tried to find an article here to cover this but was not successful. I added a pic of the resistor.
