Lionel 16639 Steam Railsounds boxcar

Just acquired a 30 year old never opened mint Lionel 16639 steam railsounds boxcar. Had no problem with the chuff-chuff or whistle, but the bell is driving me crazy. It starts at random and sometimes shuts off when I hit the bell button, but other times continues clanging away. Anyone ever have this problem during the past 30 years and if so, how did you solve it? By the way I'm using the bell button on an MTH Z4000 transformer. Thanks,
