The tooling is the same. The 38079 is the first run tmcc version while the 11420 is a 3rd run, second with Legacy offering.

The main differences are in the electronics, i.e. sound and speed control. The 38079 only has 2 chuffs per revolution while the 11420 has the correct 4 chuffs per revolution.

Here are some videos done by other forum members, to save myself ( and others) from alot of typing

I’m gonna go out on a limb here, so bear with me, and allow me to explain, and perhaps Rick can back me up if he feels the same way,……the stuff Lionel produced at the turn of THIS century, IMO is some of the finest, highest quality, most robust machines they’ve ever built,….now, I’m speaking of mechanics and mechanical construction…..clearly Legacy electronics trumps TMCC by leaps and bounds,…but when you study the construction of the stuff made in the early 2000’s it just seems to me they really had their act together, the metal seems heftier, and to me, everything just seems to be more dense, and a lot of care went into the mfr.‘ing process,…..don’t take this the wrong way, this is just an observation having had both the originals from the 2000’s apart, and the latest Legacy models,….where I think this boils down was when MTH really hit the scene with their hefty scale model offerings, Lionel had some catching up to do,..call it a “one up manship” ….so to put in a nutshell, the electronics is leaps and bounds improved, but as far as rugged construction, I’d edge out the early 2000’s Korean production scale offerings ……also as note, all of those Korean made large scale steamers are Pittman powered,…..another plus for the earlier offerings…..just an observation….
