Hello All - I will be posting the updates to my Genset here from now on! - Please check back often, ad I will be working on it Daily.

To Recap:

I bought a Vision Line Genset and knew it would need some work - and boy have i found a project!

The shell of the engine i knew was a must, and is quite hefty at $285!! - I figure i can sell my old shell however for around $100 to someone who wants to do a custom paint job on their genset!

Below is a documentation of my restoration of this engine - some things defiantly did NOT go as planned.

Top of the smoke unit - a very unique design compared to the other units I have seen.

Bottom View - Took these photos for reference.

This is the nasty surprise waiting for me inside of each of the 3 smoke units. It looks like there was WAY to much Wading and it had attached itself to the heating element. No wonder why these Gensets has no many smoke issues.

On top of that, there is a Yellow Goo in all of the units, probably from an old smoke fluid, or a bad mixture of the two.

Disassembling of each unit. - I have put all their parts in separate bowls so i can keep track of which goes to which - all 3 are slightly different in their own way.

Hardware Management! - Used a piece of cardboard with tape on on it (Sticky side up!) and then secured it down - Makes the perfect work bench for holding screws in the proper order for when you need them next!

Ahhh! - All clean. soaked the metal bits in bath with Isopropyl Alcohol. Dried them off and then cleaned them with cotton swabs - wow were they a mess!

Testing each of the 3 motors with a 9V battery in both directions to make sure they are functioning properly and are not too loud - 3 drops of oil later and they are ready to be installed!

Here are the original heating elements - I have new ones on the way along with the fiberglass wadding. I sure hope the come shaped like they are and I do not have to figure that out!

I figure if I am doing everything else, i might as well do all the parts that have wear on them.

The shell does have some broken parts and handrails. The road numbers have been rubbed off as well. I know it is possible to just get the decals from micro scale, but i would prefer to have the whole thing look and run like new.

Unfortunately the resistor's don't come shaped like your old one's. They will be pin straight, you will have to bend them like that.

Thanks,

Alex

Alex - Thank you for your post - is there an easy way to bend them to the shape that they are - I am trying to figure out how to make it look like it was done at the factory.

Hey All - Well I'm back making progress on the UP Genset - and what is this?? - A box of parts...hmmm

First things first, finish up all the smoke units. - I was able to figure out how to bend them properly - first one took some time, but after that, the others were a snap!

Perfectly Reproduced!

IMG_1220

Fully installed in the smoke unit - the hardest part about this was getting the small 3mm bolts tightened down.

IMG_1221

Adding the accessories to the new shells cab interior - I had to transfer everything from the old shell as the new shell only has the legacy antenna cables installed.

IMG_1222

All 3 smoke units back into place - this is a lot of wire management! - I hope they all work and i do not have to go back in there.

The new shell in the front with the old shell in the back

All set to rejoin the body with the chassis

IMG_1226

But wait - cannot forget the control panel! - I bought a second one as my original one looked like oil got on it. Well there is the new one from lionel and looks the exact same - oh well...on it goes.

IMG_1227

Making the final connections - there are a lot of cables and I am checking each connector incase anything got pulled out of place over time.

IMG_1228

AND THE FINISHED PRODUCT - ALL NEW WINDOWS INSTALLED!! - LOOKS LIKE NEW

AND MORE GOOD NEWS...

I put it on the track to test it, everything was working just perfectly, except the 3 smoke stacks - could not image why they were not working until I checked my switch box on the engine and saw they were all off - lol Flipped the switch and everything was working better than NEW!

Here is the old shell - will probably sell and hope to get $150 or so

IMG_1232

AND THATS IT!!

Working like new and looking like new.

Final Thoughts -

So was it cheaper to do this than buy one lightly used?

well, it might have been, but doing this means that I now know every part of that engine and how it goes together. and buying one that needed nothing just would not have been as fun.
