I have a Lionel Conrail sd40 #6308. There is extra space in the number under the can between the 0 and 8 only on one side. Is this an error ? Or did the real locomotive have this spacing. I recently got #6350 and the number looks the same on both sides

Is there a small rectangle molded into the cab between the numbers? I recall that Rock Island/ICG SD40’s had a cab vent on one side, which made for a space between road numbers on the cab side as you describe.
