Is it okay to connect a Lionel 180W Power Brick directly to the track? I don't want to buy a direct lockon if I don't have to. The instructions say that if you cut off the plug the Power Brick won't work. Thanks for any help.

Do not cut off the plug. Instead use an adapter to connect it to the track.
Yes, in this way you can feed the power from the PH-180 brick directly to the track. It has a very nice current monitoring system inside it and will cut power immediately if there's a short circuit so there's no need for anything fancier.
However there's still a challenge. No one seems to make a newer version of this kind of adapter, one that will support the new interlock in the latest bricks.
You might have to make one instead.

Thank you for the info, there is a seller on Ebay that sells an adapter cord, I'll ask him if they work with the newer style bricks. Thanks again, I never thought the day would come when I had trouble running my electric trains.
