Lionel smoke unit resistor, will it fail all at once or gradually decline???

When I modded my 2002 Dash 8 there was a good amount of the wicking material burnt onto the resistor. I carefully/cautiously cleaned it off, performed the mod to the smoke unit and got it going again. The smoke is there but not much more than I had.

Could it be time to replace the resistor???

Have you done the full rebuild as described by Mike Reagan in the Lionel video? Replacing the wick and opening up the air hold helps a lot. Also, be sure to check that the wick isn't blocking the air hold between the fan and the smoke chamber.

Yes that's the mod I did. Looks like I open it up again to check for blockage. Pretty sure it was open though!

Run it with the shell off. You may need to make sure it has plenty of wadding.
some of the 2002 engines did not have enough, when you filled them with smoke fluid the wadding would sink to the bottom of the reservoir.
