Hello, I apparently got afflicted with "Trainmaster-it is" and bought 2 very reasonable older Trainmasters. The Jersey Central 8687 runs flawlessly, but the 18309 Reading does not. The 18309 runs smoothly in the short-hood-forward direction but in the long-hood forward direction I get an occasional squalling noise out of it and the speed will drop as if something's binding up.  I did lube both locomotives from the underside before running. I did run the Reading with it's shell ajar for observation, but did not disconnect wires to totally remove the shell yet.  What's my next step ?   Thks.

As long as you get a drop or two of oil on the lowere shaft , the oil will travel down into the lower bearing and you should be good to go as you have experienced. Goodd idea to put a drop or two on the upper bearing as well. I have that Jersey Central and it had been unrun almost since new. It had a similar problem and the oil on the upper and lower bearings solved the problem.
