logging Engine Question | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

L.I.TRAINOGR Forum Member

Currently planning a logging line for the TMB train club and some discussion arose on what diameter turns we need as a minimum. I have the MTH Climax and that requires 042. Would like to know what logging engines you have and what the minimum turns required are.

I have one or more than one of each of the following: MTH Climax (DCS), Lionel two-truck Shay (Legacy), K-Line two-truck Shay (TMCC), Lionel Heisler (TMCC).

I have operated all on O42 curves at one time or another.

Lionel 3 truck Heisler runs on 0-42 no problem. It was advertised as being able to run on 0-36 but I've never tried it.

Here are the minimum curve requirements published by the manufacturers:

Lionel 3 Rail

3 Truck Pacific Coast Shay: O-54

2 Truck Shay (old K-Line): O-36

3 Truck Heisler: O-36

MTH 3 Rail

4 Truck Shay: O-54 (some listed as O-72)

3 Truck Shay: O-42

3 Truck Climax: O-42

MTH 2 Rail

4 Truck Shay: 42" Radius

3 Truck Shay: 42" Radius

3 Truck Climax: 42" Radius
