The options for powering these cars seems very limited--GHB is out of 2-rail power units for the Birney and PCC, and I don't have good info on the availability of Black Beetle drives.

The reliability of either drive seems to be in question, and I understand that the Bowser drives use larger-than-scale wheels, and they also intrude into the passenger compartment of the cars.

I'm wondering about using 26" wheeled Magic Carpet drives to power the PCC cars. I have no problem building a truck frame that will hold the drives. Has anyone done this?

I have a couple of MC drive units with 40" wheels. I've used them on a R/C diesel project and they worked just fine.

Thanks,

Jeff C

I like many of the Q Car Company products, but (and correct me if I'm wrong) they don't seem to make power trucks designed for these two cars.

And the Q Car delivery schedule seems to be "Pay me now--I'll get to it when I'm good and ready, and I'll ship them when I feel like it..." Don't get me wrong...that's the owner's prerogative, but I generally try to avoid those types of transactions (my prerogative ).

Pretty sure that they do make trucks for both cars.  Go to their Information page:

http://www.qcarcompany.com/information/index.html

and you'll even be able to find tutorials on installation.

These drives are not mass produced and sitting on a shelf waiting for your order.

Quentin hand builds every drive truck so you get in line and wait your turn until he gets to your order.  That has a lot to do with the high level of quality that is associated with Q-car drives and trucks.

He's built a couple of custom drives for me; always worth the the wait.

Thanks for the info..I was in a rush when I wrote that about Q Car, and I think my post was poorly worded.

I realize it is a small, probably spare time, business--and it is perfectly understandable that Quentin would easily be backlogged.

I also completely agree that Q's products are first rate--I apologize for the tone of that earlier post...it came out a bit more on the harsh side than intended.

Thanks again to everyone for the info! I'm currently having loads of fun trying to produce sides and ends for the NOPS trolley. I would like to get those Corgi PCC's on the track, though.

Yes, Bill.  I had neglected from listing that source of that drive.

And. not a problem, Jeff.  As you know, O scale trolley modeling can be tough being so specialized and with limited sources of drives, detail parts, and kits (precious few!).

If you can make the sides (and ends!) of your NOPS cars thick enough to serve as a master, consider making some molds and pouring resin!

"Q car" is a quality ethical company - one of the best out there. As is the case with many specialty companies they have cash flow problems and a limited staff. In my experience they are courteous, helpful and reliable. In many areas they are "the only game in town", and I would consider them the best current source of traction modeling accessories, trucks and motors in the world.
