I am experiencing failure with Menards adaptor 289-4006 - the 4.5 volt 2000 mA with 3 outlets. I have two of them and they both get very hot - and both no longer put out sufficient voltage to light Menards buildings. I measured 1.7 volts output on all three outlets connected to Menards buildings - it should be at least 4.5 volts according to building descriptions on Menards website. I've tried the two adaptors thus far - one I had just taken out of the package - the other I had only tested about a year ago - it worked then but it was a test of a less than a minute or so.
Even though they both failed to light buildings - the transformer gets very hot - is this normal? Even the plugs that plug into the structures were getting warm. Is this normal? What is causing the heat buildup in the wall unit and plugs? I understand transformers get warm after use but they got hot after a few minutes.
Tonight I'll try an old HO DC transformer with open circuit and test the building lights. Am keeping my fingers crossed the adaptors didn't blow out the buildings circuitry.
