Then it hit me one night after getting off the train. As I looked at the cars leaving the station at night the green tinted windows really jumped out at me. Right then I knew I had to improve my three rail versions at home. Luckily the fix is cheap and easy!!

Dick Blick Art Supply carries green acetate for $5 a sheet. A few cuts and some scotch tape make a huge difference. Look at the side by side photo and you be the judge!

Great improvement.

How did you disassemble the car?

How did you remove the clear, OEM 'windows'?

Thanks!

the cars come apart real easy. Just eight screws and then lift off the shell.

I left the OEM windows in place and simply taped the green acetate over them.

Yep that looks just like the Metra cars. Nice improvement!

Must be the METRA cars on the former C&NW lines, as the Burlington lines are all fluted stainless steel sides, and not painted.

Very nice improvements anyway.

Yep, that’s one huge problem I can’t fix so easy! I wish they were fluted too.

Looks great.  That is something GGD failed to do on the El Capitan Cars.

It’s one of those small details that makes a huge difference. With it being a cheap fix it’s a wonder that they don’t do it at the factory. At least this time it was easy to get the shell off!!

Jim, have you tried to improve the GGD El Capitan cars? Are the shells easy to get off?

Pete,

Perhaps the new owner of my El Cap will read this post.  I sold my El Cap along with the Atlas F7”s.  I have it in HO and hope to be running those in 7-8 months.
