[THIS IS NOT A BASHING THREAD. JUST AN OBSERVATION.]
I've had a few Lionel products where this has happened now. Lionel produces a core item, then later on an add-on item but with a mismatched paint job. The first was the add-on hopper to the Norfolk & Western Warhorse J set. It was not weathered, and looked out of place in the rest of the factory weathered set. Then I had their JLC series Greyhound Challenger, but the auxiliary tender had different shades of grey and yellow. The latest is the add-on diesel to the 1552 Burlington Northern boxcar set. Who else has noticed this trend with some of Lionel's products? Or other manufactures too?
