[THIS IS NOT A BASHING THREAD. JUST AN OBSERVATION.]

I've had a few Lionel products where this has happened now. Lionel produces a core item, then later on an add-on item but with a mismatched paint job. The first was the add-on hopper to the Norfolk & Western Warhorse J set. It was not weathered, and looked out of place in the rest of the factory weathered set. Then I had their JLC series Greyhound Challenger, but the auxiliary tender had different shades of grey and yellow. The latest is the add-on diesel to the 1552 Burlington Northern boxcar set. Different shades of green:

Who else has noticed this trend with some of Lionel's products? Or other manufactures too?

I'm not sure this can really be avoided in today's world of train manufacturers.  The problem is that the factories and suppliers keep changing.  So even having the same paint codes etc, there's no guarantee they will match.   Whenever I want to buy an Addon I always buy it in person so I can see if it will be a close match or way off like you described.  I want to buy the new CN tank train Addon cars coming out, but its been years since the set first came out so I'm going to check them out before I buy them.  The factory that made the original set is long gone.  But I'm hoping they will be close.
