Youtube video

I'm not sure whether to post this in 2-rail or in tin-plate, because the video is of a model railroad originating in the late 1920's. Built by one person over 40 years with a surface of 12 by 30 meters and 3120 meter rails. Of course everything is handmade: rails, rolling stock, buildings and even people (all carved from wood and there are LOTS). Definitely worth a visit if you're in the neighbourhood.

It's about 1.5 hours driving from where I live, I've visited a couple of years back. There are glass windows on all sides and you can walk around while it's operating. There people running the layout were very nice and invited me to come inside for the operating session. Basically there's a cellar underneath the entire layout so you can comfortably walk around under the entire layout. Sort of the size of a swimming pool. There are a few narrow aisles where you can stand where the trains then run around you on all sides. The entire layout is under digital control (it used to be controlled with relays, but that was too complicated/dangerous) so there are lots of trains running on the layout (there were also no hidden staging sections). I think I have some more photo's somewhere on my drive.
