Frankly, attaching the mountains to my walls never occurred to me. Perhaps that is because they are constructed of 2x4s and 3/4" plywood as their bases and level tops. The rockface and stone retaining-walls define each level as fascia, a kind of outside face.

I wouldn't recommend attaching to any wall.   My shallow relief mountains attach to 1/4 inch luan plywood which I cut to create the horizon profile of the mountain/hill top...  The bottom of this plywood is attached like fascia, but to the "back" of the layout frame...

Plus,  after I built them that way,  I found those 600 LED strings of lights (1/2 inch wide) and decided to mount them  between the 1/4 inch plywood and the blue sky backdrops that are 1/8 inch masonite.... Creates a really cool glow in the sky that looks just like dusk...
