I am a sucker for chrome plated 027 tank cars, so I guess they get some of my money

Oh boy, more BIG BOYS.
The flat cars with sherman tanks or red cross trucks are interesting but nothing else for me.
Ok, this is annoying. They just delivered amfleets without the chrome finish, and now they catalog chrome ones... I mean, just pick a finish and stick with it.
There's 2 things in there that are calling my name. I dont think its a bad catalog, but it isnt a great one either.
The lit up GS4 is neat. Doesnt float my boat, but I can see that doing alright.
Thank you for the link JHZ563!! May God bless us all!!
As Gary said, a lot of great looking items there!! For my small space and budget, I'm liking the RailKing Scale RSD-5 in Western Maryland livery. That is just the ticket for me! I think I may submit a pre-order.
I like the Railking Western Maryland RSD-5, and the Daylight with Christmas lights. But those extra lights cost $200!
I'm in for an NS ES44DC & a few freight cars. Nothing else for me, so I got off easy
A lot of nice looking things in it ...
Not a bad catalog at first glance. I'll look at this later tonight. The Daylight is interesting although I'm a bit skeptical of the durability of the LED lights.
Quickly glancing through it I saw a decent amount of the Early Steam Engines, that is something my wife would like. I do like the day light with all the lights, probably won't be getting anything from it, but some of the items looked interesting.
I’m in for the Boston fire department box car and the 44 ton Strasburg switcher. .
I like too much of it...
STRASBURG 44 TONNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like there's nothing in it for me.
and once again, for the last 13 years, a Kodachrome livery is nowhere to be found.
Otherwise I like the AEM's Amtrak and the 44 Tonner in Strasburg livery
Paul
I'm spending alot out of this one Lackawanna 44 tonner, Harlem transfer box cab, Jersey central rsd 5 , Class A, Triplex
etc etc etc
Seems to be this is majority recently cataloged products.....
-The Premier G5 was done within the past 2 years, same with the Big Boy, Railking Pacifics, SD70s, Class A (my LHS still has the most recent delivery on the shelf), Cab Forwards, AEM7s,(my LHS still has 2 on the shelf from the December 2016 delivery. I bought one - a REAL winner!), Long Island ALCOs, etc
Out of the engines above, I've got already what I want - Got the SD70, AEM7, LI Alcos, G5 4-6-0, etc. Same for the Blue Mountain and Reading 425...bought the less-than-accurate Lionel version and have had it on the layout over the past week. Love the colors, pinstripes on the wheels, stars on the wheel centers, etc. Great engine regardless of where the bell is.
Kind of makes you wonder if they have a ton of extras they can't get rid of in the warehouse (kind of doubt it) or if they sold out so well (also kind of doubt it), they're doing them again.
Don't get me wrong, I see some things I'd like to have - the Chessie S2 switcher, MARC AEM7, Strasburg 44t and a few random pieces of rolling stock. With a move pending in the very near future, 40 engines already on the walls at home, a $4,000+ Lionel catalog bill, I'm kind of at the "how much more do I really need" stage.
Going to try to buy:
1. Premier Flatcar with Army Ambulance
Wishlist
1. RKing NKP BERK
2. RKing R&N 425
3. RKing Oveton Santa Fe Passenger cars
Nice catalog, but my money is safe.
Bob
Maybe the ICG GP38.
Sadly, I was hopeful for something "new," almost anything. Maybe next spring.
Only the Reading & Northern full length vista car for me.
As the saying goes...
"My wallet is safe."
Couple of R62A Subways for me... And that's it.
I was REALLY looking forward to a follow-on Rocky Mountaineer passenger set to go with the locomotive that was just released a couple of weeks ago. Strange to have a beautiful paint scheme on a locomotive like that, but no train to go along with it. That's all I really wanted from MTH. So the good news is my wallet is VERY safe with this catalog. But I'll keep a look-out for those passenger cars in 2018 Volume 2.
I'm in for two NYO&W 44-tonners. I am very pleased they have been released in both paint schemes.
RBMN Dome car and the Strasburg Tonner. Maybe the Ferromex ES44, but not sure yet.
One of my first train memories as a kid was at Landmark in Ohio. My Dad had a friend that was an engineer and he took me to the elevators and we rode around on the trains for a whole day. I will be pre-ordering at least one Landmark hopper. I also like the Monon boxcar, the Railking Berks and all the military themed equipment.
Does Anyone know if the PRR GE 44tonner will have a new road number like the WBB did with theirs?
Also Paper delivered in a reefer? Was that prototypical?
I love the Conrail Police coach! Makes me want to add a light bar to it!
I like the Altoona Brewery reefer released again.
The PRR GE 44 Tonner IF in a different road number!
The DOT U30C
And another interesting item is the Railking North pole express.. copying the coat tails of the Lionel Polar express.
Hoping for some small steam in Western roads... nada.

Like the Sherman Tank flat cars....looks like many recent reruns
Page 2 is the best page as that is the 3 rail club I belong to, the Paradise and Pacific Railroad. What a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers to keep this railroad running smoothly all the time. I can't take much credit as my work schedule only allows me to be a mere operator on weekends. All of the credit goes to the people who are there frequently making the necessary repairs to keep the layout fun for the public. Just because it's a toy, it's still a railroad and the Paradise and Pacific is only as good as its maintenance.
I will say though, that operating my El Capitan / Super Chief with sometimes 18 cars is quite the experience. Thanks to MTH for coming out to check our the club!
I actually enjoyed the catalog. Not in the market for new trains at the moment, but I did see a few things I'd be interested in.
I liked seeing the vintage CTA EL cars, just not my era. Hoping they make the modern version soon.
The premier flats with tanks are awesome. I'll grab one of those and park a tank in front of the VFW hall. Might even grab a well car or two to increase the variety of shipping containers in my yard.
OK, a second chance for a N&W A with the Timken side rod bearings....
Maybe...
were I also not already covered-over with Polar Express, I'd have to have the North Pole cars...
About time they make the Saskatchewan 100-ton hopper! I'll probably get that and maybe a few freight cars, when they're released.
Nice to see some Chicago 'L' sets, too, though a re-release of the 3200 series or something more modern would have been better. Guess I'll just have to wait...
Interesting that MTH is now using Solido die cast Military vehicles on their flat cars. They list them as 1/43 scale however I do have quite a few Solido Sherman's on my military train and they look closer to 1/48 than 1/43 as they are only slightly larger than a 1/50 Corgi Sherman. The ambulances and any other wheeled military vehicle by Solido are definitely 1/43. MTH used to use Hobby Master die cast Sherman tanks which have more detail than a Solido Sherman but the Solido Sherman is still a nice tank (Can you tell I love Sherman Tanks) . Too bad I currently have excess Sherman's, Priests, 2 1/2 Trucks and a Pershing waiting for flatcars. I did order a six pack of 50 ft flats (Lionscale) which should take car of that problem.
I am glad to see MTH back making Military flatcars.
BIGTRUCKPETE,
If all you want is a Sherman to put in front of your VFW either order the Rail King Flat car that is $20 cheaper than the Premiere Flatcar. You will only get one Sherman but that is all you will need to guard a VFW. Or go on Ebay do a search for Solido die cast, you should find one for $10.
JohnB
Thanks for the direct link.
No much interest there for me. I did like the Wabash caboose and the Shell tank car though.
My list:
- Amtrak AEM-7 915
- CSX ES44DC
- Strasburg 44-tonner
- NYC P-2 Lightning Stripe 228
- Illinois Central Gulf GP38-2
- Canadian Pacific Boxcar with LEDs
- RBMN Full Dome Car
- RBMN Observation car
- RBMN Coach
- Pullman Hickory Run
- Philadelphia & Reading Observation
- Amtrak Phase 4B 2-pack
- Conrail Police Training Coach

It would be great if they sold the flatcars as a separate sale item as like you, I already have a more tanks than I need. I still may order a 4 pack of them though. I really like the US Army Pacific and is definitely in the running for spending my limited budget on.

I'm tempted to purchase the Chicago L cars in Mercury Green.. Will look nice with my Electroliners.
Now I have to come up with a plan for a short "EL" stub on my future layout.
What I would really like to see is these cars set up with Skokie Swift "pans" & a latter day paint scheme.

I know what this is. UP 844 came out to the Pac NW in 2007, and double-headed with 4449 all the way past Everett, WA from Portland in some fan trips over several days. When the locomotive came together at Portland, the UP crew had that magnetic sign for "UP 845" made for the cab of 4449. It lasted less than a few minutes and was clearly removed before the train started its northbound run to Tacoma that day.

I'd wondered whatever happened to it. Good to know it got recycled.

That would explain why there's practically no pictures. Looks like the MTH model is an expensive model of joke, then.
Plus, isn't the "Y" suffix for yard locomotives?
Rusty
Well not disappointed at all, since meeting and talking to Mike W. here at the NS Heritage Event, knew better.
Sure would have been nice if they tooled for a Premier NS Buena Vista. The same tooling would made a very respectable UP Fox River too.
But see the Rail King fans can now order a UP "Flag" baggage car which to good.
They offer a MARC Rail AEM-7 "toaster" but no cars. Why not offer a set of smoothside coaches in MARC colors? They would be closer to the prototype than the fantasy Amfleet cars previously made. In fact, use the sleeping car tooling which has the spacing of the windows more similar to the ex Pennsy 21 room cars which later became MARC commuter coaches.
I have always suggested that MTH offer a set of smoothside MARC cars. Now another locomotive, no cars! These disjointed product offerings only hurt MTH sales. I am still seeking an answer as to why MTH offered in 1970s pre Amtrak "auto-train" car carriers only , and no passenger set? Wouldnt a better business plan include offering the entire set?
Columbia MARYLAND is so close to MARC Rails operating area that no one ever thought of offering a set of the smoothside coaches that plied the rails nearby?
;-)

I like the Long Island FA's but wouldn't it have been smarter (and more accurate) to have the passenger cars be all coaches?

The "UP 845Y" magnetic sign was carried from that location in the video to the station stop in Vancouver, WA, where it was removed.

I think the magnetic signs was returned to Steve Lee. However, there were other "fun events" while on display at Fife Yard in Tacoma, plus in the return trip back to Portland.
Gotta go with the small lettering 4449 w/ Christmas lights.
Like the lightning stripe P2, the flatcars with tanks and the Harlem transfer box cab
Hot Water posted:I think the magnetic signs was returned to Steve Lee. However, there were other "fun events" while on display at Fife Yard in Tacoma, plus in the return trip back to Portland.
The funniest thing was the 4449 crew (or someone they knew, anyway), made a giant "Southern Pacific" road name for 844's tender, in the UP's typeface if memory serves. I happened to be at the Fife yard the morning after it was placed on the tender (I assume it was done at night) and caught it before the UP crew got there to remove it. The 4449 crew was there, laughing at it and taking photos. I have a photo of it somewhere but don't recall where it is.
I tried looking online but couldn't find anything showing it. But I saw it, all right!
As for the 845 sign being removed at Vancouver, I have a photo someone took just before the Columbia River bridge and it's missing from Doyle's side. Either it was removed before then or the guy is very skilled at photoshop (could be either, n all fairness).
The two SOO LINE GP9 diesel engine locos are what I have been waiting for someone to mass produce.
I would like to get the Grand Trunk Western F3 A units powered and the non-powered A unit.
The Canadian National SuperTherm refrigerator cars are what I need for the GTW trains.
I like the Safety-Kleen scheme on tank cars.
Perhaps the United Petroleum Gas 33K tank car.
The RailKing Norfolk and Western auto carrier on flat car is one I have to get.

NYO&W 44 Tonners in Maroon!!!
MTH: One request, please! Please change the engine numbered 102 to 103. Save 105 from the next time you make the orange bib version. I think you will sell more.

I definitely am going to preorder the Railking Penn Central RSD-5 locomotive and am thinking about the Railking R62 Subway set and the Premier Line Amtrak(Wave) Dash8-40BW Diesel Engine. I found this catalog to be pretty good.
No tinplate club cars? Still waiting on my 2016 MTHRRC caboose that was supposed to ship last june.
The four Premier 40' box cars are an appealing mix.
I like the Landmark PLTX scheme, but it is on a much smaller PS-2-CD 4427 Cu Ft 3-bay covered hopper.
The Canada and Saskatchewan 100-ton cylindrical hoppers could be a choice.

Justin, buy the chrome, then hit them with a clear flat add a little weather if you like ( prior to adding clear coat) and it will look like the ones running in the NEC and Union station DC. Seen them when I had to go into the district.

I have to admit this is a good catalog for me, like the B&O 44T, the Amtrak Toaster, and the Amtrak 8-40BW, the B&O Boxcab, and about a dozen cars but most of all the N&W class A 2-6-6-4. Now I need to buy wisely being retired now, I guess I could sell off some of the stable and cars again. Now what priority do I put the new MTH colors? N&W 1218 then what.... #2 is the Amtrak toaster, I like ugly.
Chicago Great Western F3 and passenger cars. Wonder if there will be enough orders to make them happen.

Yes!!! 100% Agree. Although I can see some reasoning in having the same number side by side for display, having four different cab numbers would be much better for operators and those filling rosters.
very poor catalog for 2-railers, mostly reruns. I have the impression that the offering of 2 rail locomotives is diminishing by the year?
This catalog wasn't very interesting for me. I'm a modern diesel railroader. The ES44DC's aren't interesting and the road numbers of NS in the catalog are actually ES40DC's. I was hoping for ET44AC's and a rerun of the NASA solid rocket motor transport set.
Surprised they did pm 1225 in north pole. Hope there is no legal battle pending based on how close it is to the polar x. Is the steam institute in mi not allowed to use polar express on the real on for christmas trips? Ive seen it in north pole livery for real i think and surprised they cant use polar x. In any case i dont see anything in the catalog for me. How about an Arcade and Attica 44 ton !
MEH
Lionel is getting better and better at putting whistle steam on lots of steam engines - mostly Legacy, I realize, but it's not exclusive to one or two engines per catalogue. I haven't done a careful survey but it seems like MTH put whistle steam in the restoration Big Boys and that's more or less it (not in the Class A, not in the Cab Forward, not in the Crescent Limited...). Does anybody know why MTH doesn't seem to use whistle steam very much?
The Army caboose is nice but I just made my own. Who knew.
A surprise to me is the 36 foot Hummel/New Haven car. I have two at my club but they were made years ago by a local person who contracted to have them made. He still sells them at train shows.

Greg,
I preordered the Lionscale set of 6 Pennsy Flatcars. Although the description in the Lionel catalog said Southern the picture was Pennsy so I emailed Dave Olson and he confirmed that they were indeed Pennsy. The price of the 6 pack came to a little more than $30 per flatcar so I thought that was pretty good. Also they have nothing on them so all my military stuff will find a home. The only bad thing about MTH flatcars is they all use the same tank with the same numbers on the tank. Not a big issue.
JohnB
Maybe a Strasburg 44 Tonner and hopefully he will offer the Ingersoll Rand Box Cab again in Reading next year.
After years, MTH has re-issued the AGEIR box cabs. Unfortunately for me, the IR Demonstrator and the CNW in yellow (missing the green stripes, though) are both being offered. Decisions, decisions.
Chicago CTA L cars for me!
If I heard right those Christmas light GS-4's will be here shortly and only 150 made

Happy to see another run of brill streetcars. Ill prob pick up the Christmas one
I will pick up a couple of the chromed tank cars to add to my chromed consist.
I'm really into WWII trains, and I would pick up the tank and ambulance cars except that they are 1:43. I already run a bunch of flats with 1:50 WWII vehicles so these would look kind of odd.
John B, I'm often times looking for a good deal on WWII die cast military gear. I don't seem to able to find a tank for less than $25. 1:48 or 50 is a hard scale to find a bargain in.
Alan
Picking up the Milw RD FM. Already called Pat's Trains and preordered.
Sunrise
Since I’m switching from HO to 3rail O, I’ve been looking for modern power. I have 2 NS locos on layaway at my local hobby shop, and will probably pre-order the CSX ES44 units, both numbers. Maybe some freight cars too.
My daughter (who is 5) loves the colors of the ACL Railking E3s since she saw one of the real units in a YouTube video with the 611. It’s tempting. It would give her something to run when she’s playing with trains with daddy.
AJZEND,
I would not worry about the Sherman tanks, as I said I believe they are 1/48 as the ones I have on my military train look fine with Corgi Sherman's and Tamiya 1/48 Sherman's too. I agree the ambulances are 1/43 so they are a little large. I do have a couple 1/43 vehicles on my train but I am careful not to put them on the same flatcar as a 1/50 Corgi tank.
I have been buying die cast military vehicles for at least the last 15 years. I'd say my average purchase price would be $20. My high price would be $30 and my low would be $10. I picked up several Hobby Master Sherman's that MTH used on prior flatcars for $10 each at York a few years ago. He said they were excess he bought from MTH. Also picked up about 10 vehicles from my train club that came in a collection the club purchased. They were mounted on 027 flatcars that I gave away but kept the vehicles. They will be going on the Lion Scale flat cars that are in the Lionel 2017 V2 catalog.
eBay is another good source of buying die cast military vehicles too. Don't be afraid of overseas vendors sometimes the wait is long but the price can be real good even with shipping included. Stay away from overpriced buy it now stuff but if you set a limit on your bidding and back out if the bidding passes by your limit. Another one is around the corner.
