tiu is powered, no power to track, using HO

Got a question posed to me by my LHS.  We have a customer who has a new MTH HO engine.  He placed it on the track and it won't work.  TIU is powering up(red light) but there is no power going to the track. He is using fixed 1  ( He indicated that he is using a test light to find if there is power.

Since I have never played with HO DCS, is it the same principle as O scale?  Could it be a problem with a version of the TIU or remote? Can anyone who is familiar with this shed some light so I can help the customer

thanks

A little more info.

He is using a Spectrum Magnum and is getting 15 VDC

He is not getting a light, only the momentary flash of the light on the front.

He indicated that he has used this TIU before with O scale and is switching to HO.  So I know the TIU worked.

I had him place a regular O scale transformer to Fixed 1 and the red light will not come on.

Any other direction I could go? any advice appreciated

There are 2 ways to power a tiu (turn on).... power to fixed 1 or an aux power supply.

Since fixed 1 doesn't work that leaves an aux power supply,

I know a lionel command base wall adapter will light up(power up) a tiu if you have one handy. I've used it for downloading sound file but it's a little light for all tiu functions. I think you have to get the tiu working as a first step.

You're eventually going to have to check out   the fuse on fixed 1... probably blown. but for now , power up the tiu with an aux power supply and use fixed 2.

Gregg,

Here is a little more I just spoke to the customer.

the engine in question runs in conventional mode fine. (track power direct from transformer)

When power is applied to fixed one with the track connected, there is no light on.

When he plugs in a pack to the AUX power the red light stays on. But there is no power going to the track.  I would assume that one of the internal fuses is blown, but why when the aux is plugged in it still won't work.

I will be getting the TIU and remote in soon, but I am trying to troubleshoot before then.

thanks for the help

No he doesn't have to do anything with the remote. The Remote communicates with the tiu  which control all 4 channels. Fixed 1 and fixed 2 are straight through connections providing the fuses are not blown

Each of the 4 tiu channels has a fuse.

Here's what I would do.. we know fixed 1 is not working so we power the tiu with an aux power supply. The tiu is now turned on . Just to verify the remote is talking to the correct tiu press the "read" on the dcs remote (bottom left)

A message should appear.... Tiu found. no aiu box connected.

If that's all good try hooking up fixed 2 In with the power supply and fixed 2 out to the track. Add the engine and away you go.
