I'm adding/updating some LEDs, redoing some wiring, etc. As part of that, I decided to reach out and get your thoughts on the following: I use MTH 4000s. When I originally installed my 1st one years ago, I added a QSI PowerGuard to each throttle.
Is this overkill and unnecessary with MTH 4000 technology?

You know Terry, I have a MRC Dual 270 and has FAST breakers. but since I already owned 4 Power Guards from when I only had a PW ZW, I use them anyways. I figure it doesn't hurt so why not?

Our club had Powerguards. I had to open them up once. What they are is TVS diodes along with a peak detector that flashes a LED when voltage is above the TVS quenching voltage. The flashing LEDs will make you a believer in TVS protection. Ours would create a light show at the train shows, mostly due to bouncing pickup rollers.
Bottom line Powerguards are good but TVS diodes are just as effective.

@Norton - thanks!!! I did not know that about them _ i have them front ending my TIU which I know also has TVS devices built in for each channel. Still, I just figured "why not add in some extra protection since it doesn't hurt"
