John,

If I go through the dealer portal and attempt to order this particular part, it comes up on the order as "Not Available", so I guess that the process to order the part via the consumer side also knows it's not available.

However, when I attempt to order a part via the consumer process that is available, I see a Buy it Now! opportunity and get to actually put it in my cart.

So, the consumer site appears to work a bit differently from the dealer site, i.e., I can backorder a part if I'm a dealer but not if I'm a consumer. I can understand why MTH would treat dealers and consumers differently, since the former is in a committed business relationship where there's a responsibility to purchase what's ordered (at the time of actual fulfillment) while the latter is not.

I don't think it's right to take customer payment in advance of fulfillment, or practical to hold customer payment information until the part is shipped. It appears that the process is working as designed. although it would be nice if the inability for a consumer to order an out-of-stock part was a bit better explained.
