Mianne benchwork for phase one of my new layout is due in a couple of weeks.  I am seeking input as to the layout design.  First a bit of background - got back in to the hobby after a 40 year absence (formerly N gauge, now hirail O).
 
Am modeling a portion of the Kansas City Terminal Railway with Union Station being the main focal point with 4 A/D tracks and a thru track.  Other tracks are for thru freights and a bit of local switching.  Layout will be double mainlined with intent of running mostly passenger trains and some thru freights with a few switching spots.  Goal is broad curves (minimum O72) and ability to run multiple trains just to watch, but also be able to do some real switching ops, both psgr and freight.  Layout will be built in phases, starting with the Union Station are (Left portion of the diagram below).  Switches on the plan are Ross O72, but I plan to use mostly Ross #6, maybe #4 in the yards, and Gargraves flex everywhere else.  The reverse loop on the right is essentially an interchange with a staging yard. Grids are 12".  Lower portion may eventually contain a small turntable as well as engine/psgr car prep facilities.
 
Please take a look at the diagram - it's not perfect in terms of final product - it was planned with RailModeller (I'm on a Mac and do not want to boot Windows). The loop in the middle will actually be expanded to the left end, run around the wall (am not yet proficient in RailModeller to do multi-levels) and elevated.

When I look at your plan I see a double track mainline and a branch line with a reverse loop at the end. A minor problem is: without another reverse loop, once you go up the branch, you can't change direction without backing up.

 

I have a solution to this. Where the branch leaves the inner main, add two switches and form a wye. That will allow you to enter and exit the branch in either direction, and you won't need another reverse loop.

Thanks for that catch!!  Exactly the kind of input I was looking for.

That's quite different from the first one.

 

If you "own the rights" to the upper right corner, I would extend the staging and make it double ended and add a loop. This way you could either store made up trains, or use it as a lead and switch cars and make up new trains. I'm actually going to have a couple of yards on loops under my layout.

 

It makes operation easier if you don't have to back into the yard every time.

George, yes, definitely plan to have duck under, or swing section to allow for ingree/egress.  I will also locate tracks closer than on the diagram - still am working on getting proficient with Railmodeller, so hopefully can keep the benchwork against the wall at a 30" depth.  Otherwise, will also add access hatches.

 

Elliott, I have been advised by the railway's legal department that any efforts to acquire rights to the upper right corner would not be successful and that other citizens who use the space would mount an aggressive defense campaign .  However, I've taken your advice and moved the staging yard - may go under table and loop.

Thanks for asking Steve.  I do have some updates - am on my 27th revision using RR Modeller s/w and the plan is essentially final.  The plan below still shows some oddities, such as track off the bench and non-parallel arrival/departure tracks, but that will be fixed in 1:1 construction.  The trick for me is to work back and forth between the computer design and laying out a full scale design with GarGraves flex track and Ross switch templates.
 
In general, I have simplified and whittled portions away with each new version. Kansas City's Union Station is the main focal point and will reside on the left against the wall.  Because of space restrictions, I will create this as a flat with the north waiting room extending over the 3 A/D and the Pullman set off tracks.  Operations will primarily be passenger service, but I want to do a little bit of freight, hence a few industries, including the old KC Star printing plant, the Crossroads Freighhouse and some industry in the West Bottoms.  The lower right portion will replicate the High Line as it goes west from Union Station into the West Bottoms.  Top right is the coach yard.
 
This first phase uses 30" wide Mianne bench and is 24 ' in length.  Once I get track work and wiring done for phase 1, and finish the floor (RaceDeck), will move on the rest of the layout.  Even now, with just a portion of the RaceDeck finished and the walls painted, it feels more like a room rather than a basement cavern.  I purposely put white tiles under the layout assuming I will be spending a considerable time under there over the next couple of years and these 56 year old eyes need all the help they can get!
 
In the photos, you can see a rear elevation drawing of Union Station which I got from an HO Kansas City Southern modeler in the northwest.  At 6 feet long, it is closer to HO than O (otherwise would have been 11 feet and would have completely overwhelmed the space).  I can live with the proportions.  As to era, will be all - from the Pioneer Zephyr to the current Amtrak - who knows, a bit of steam might show up one day.  And if anyone ever models MoPac Eaglette, it will be there too!  Kansas City Terminal will use an SW8 to do local switching - will also find an old GP for freight moves.  Will keep road names to those which have actually used Union Station - which leaves me with lots of choices.
 
Of course, this being KC, the iconic Western Auto building with its lighted sign will have a prominent position in the corner.  Pretty cool, since we lived in that condo complex for 13 months - a train lover's dream come true.  Altho, between brakes and the curve that it sits on, the squealing wheels can get old <g>.
 
The latest gadget is the Apple Hue starter set of LED bulbs.  Placed in small clamp-on work lights, they provide an amazing amount of well controlled and colored light to simulate dawn/dusk/sunsets/midday sun, etc.  These bulbs are pretty amazing - endless color control, all remote form an iPhone or iPad.  Photo shows exaggerated color for effect, but you can literally dial in any color you want, and control up to 50 lights in groups or individually.  Coverage is pretty good too - they are pricey, but I think I can light everything for less than the cost of a new Lionel steam loco.

Charlie, you are spot about the length of those station tracks - on screen they looked plenty long, until I put a consist together and compared it.  Am using a 4-way Ross at one end and the curved turnouts opposite to allow another couple car lengths.  Something tells me that once those trains start running that I'm going to keep adding cars <g>.

Thanks for commenting on my layout design. As a new member, and new to O guage after a 40+ year hiatus with N and HO, I'm watching yours with great interest since the latest design features much of what I envision once I reclaim a bedroom to "unwrap" the interim layout I'm working on now. I really like the looks of the GarGraves flex track, but I also like the RealTrax I got with my initial RailKing DCS set. My layout is 2" foam over a 1x3 grid, but you have me considering a 1/2" plywood base with 1" foam instead.

 

Anyway, just wanted to check in to see the latest. I'm looking forward to following your progress.
